Cool story. I'm questioning it though. I'm not sure if any of fettermans men carried a gun like that. I'm thinking it was a battle field pickup from one of the Indians.

It could be....however...I wouldn't say for sure...until I see better pictures of it.
Hawken rifles were used by various Indians...along with Leman Rifles...J.Henry Rifles....Trade Guns in both flint and percussion....
Bows and arrows....were still in use as well.
The US troops were armed with Spencer Carbines if Cavalry and 1861 / 63 Rifle Muskets if Infantry.....the two civilian scouts had Henry Repeating Rifles.

One of the comments said it was buried and unearthed in an archaeological dig at the site. Curious why it would be buried. Seems like if it was in useable condition it would've been taken by someone.
