Used to be this amazing restaurant inS.E. Portland, in the Reed Collage area, sort of between Foster Road and Woodstock around the 30th region, it was an Old 3 story house made into a restaurant, they were super well known and THE place to go for Date night, or other big life events, anyways the food was amazing, they had a basement area where you could get "Bar Food" like the worlds best burgers, and such, had a great big fireplace that was always going, Cannot remember the name of the place, don't see it on any maps or guides, but DAMN, that place was amazing! Edit, it was called Ye Old Town Crier, closed in 96!

Michaels Italian Beef and Sausage Co, They are still around, they moved though, It is now under new ownership and have moved locations, but the food is still amazing, you want Chicago styled Hot Grinders or Hod dogs/Hot Weiners, this is THE place! Funky, but Oh So Good! They are down on Hawthorn now, better then ever, a Beloved City Classic that has survived, if you love a good Spicy Grinder, you do not wanna miss this place!

Organ grinder was a whole experience, the pizza, video games, silent movies with organ making the sound effects. That organ rocked the house. Sure had fun there as a kid back in the 80's.

The Metro food court on Broadway in the early 80's. Or maybe it was called the Metro Underground. Seemed like it was across and down a block from Pioneer square. Hardly remember it though. Pretty sure it closed in the 80's.

I remember Bannings in Tigard during the 90's. Had a friend that waitressed there for year or two during that time. I lived a few blocks from there for a while. Didn't eat there much though cause wasn't a fan of the food.

Jakes in Bend, at the old truck stop location on S HWY 97. Was known for huge portions, and for being greasy. I didn't care for it much but lots of people liked it. Liked Pilot Butte drive in better than Jakes, but that was a long time ago, haven't been to Pilot Butte in probably 20 years.

Sno-cap in Sisters. I remember that place growing up in CO. I recall waiting forever for the food, which wasn't that good. 3 strikes and never stopped there again despite driving by 100 times. Ice cream was the thing to get there, hard to mess that up.

Big O in Redmond. Was a local spot growing up. Was open 24/7 for a while back in the day. Can't remember the food for some reason.

Mcdonalds back in the 80's. I recall that the Big Mac was one of the best burgers you could get anywhere back then. And I remember when they changed the sauce mid to late 80's and it wasn't that good after that. Then the quality of the burgers seemed to keep declining. Even Dairy queen had a decent triple burger back in the 80's. Would eat McD's cheese burger occasionally after that but haven't eaten there in 20 years. Don't eat fast food any more though.
Sno Cap was great! , and the milk shakes at the drug store up the street to the east were awesome as well

We had a Sizzler in Eureka that the wife and I would hit 3 or 4 times a month, (breakfast, dinner) best salad bar. Wife loved the chicken wings, they also had a local micro brew on tap ($1 pints). Steaks were hit or miss but still palatable. Sadly the owner had a POS son and had to close down due to financial trouble.

Izzys and Sizzler for the same reason. Great salad bar.

Ha! . we had a Sizzler many years ago up in Everett, WA, ... the salad bar was the best ever , the steaks not so much

Drive up a&w with the little speakers and they bring you your food. Of course if they had those now in Portland you would have to endure that damn stinking smell of weed and rap music blasted for the whole neighborhood. So I guess coming back in a rural environment where there is more respect for others would be good. Wouldn't work on D lead commie shothole cities though. Probably get robbed to boot.
Stayton has one!

The Holland!
Just off main St in downtown Vancouver. Started by the same family (Propstra) that founded Burgerville USA. Family style meals and GREAT ice cream treats.
I think Burgerville's 2nd location (original was on mill plain) was at 78th st and hwy 99 in Hazel dell. Mom & Dad would take us there for 19 cent burgers before going to hazel dell drive in for a movie on the BIG screen.

Of course, Rose's
One of my favorite memories from childhood involves the Original Rose's location, was it SE or downtown? I can't remember where, but at the time my parents had a commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning business and Rose's Cafe was one of their accounts.
Since all the fans, grills etc had to be shut down to clean, all the work had to be performed at night. I remember being awake when we got their but my mom took me inside put my blanket and pillow in a booth and told me to go to sleep. They worked almost all night since their equipment hadn't been cleaned in years and it was pretty bad, so sometime early AM the baker showed up when my parents were cleaning up their tools and mess to get out of the kitchen. The 1st thing the baker made was their HUGE cinnamon rolls and my mom woke me up in the booth and on the table was a monster cinnamon roll with a mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. We all sat there in a empty restaurant enjoying those rolls with hot chocolate. Good memory!

So my memory is a little vague (early 80's), when I worked in Port Orchard (WA) there was a shack that had some of the best clam chowder. The closest I've come since is probably the Crazy Norwegian in Port Orford.

I'll say another good one was The Rustler. It was a western themed steak and burger grill and salad bar outfit. Right across the street to the east from where the Portland convention center is now. They had lariats and pistols and spurs and things hanging from the ceiling. For a young kid (which I was then ) it was awesome. It become a Sizzler for a bit in the end, but the Rustler was super cool.

Well, I don't know if its still there or not, but back in the 70's & 80's (that's the 1970s & 80s not the 1870s & 80s) there used to be a Pub in downtown Portland called the Elephant & Castle. Loved their Fish n Chips & their Dart Boards !!!

What I learned from this thread, is that the restaurant business is tough business to be in.

Davidson's Restaurant in Tigard is still kicking after many decades. Different owners but the place pretty much looks the same.
