Shari's closed? We saw the writing on the wall.. Their restaurants were in terrible shape. Even while they were open, they looked closed from the outside.
Earlier in the year we went to the one in Grants Pass and same thing. Terrible shape; run down, dirty, broken items, bathrooms have a keycode to access. Wife was up in Eugene today and took a snapshot of a closed one up there:

Interesting, Elmer's. I worked at a gas station across the street from the original Elmer's on 82nd very near I-80N, now I-84. I knew the family. We know Elmer's really expanded their locations. The one in Oregon City closed for no apparent reason 10 years ago, and the remaining ones are not of the same quality they were in the seventies. I never go to them.

.

That Elmer's, never really my thing, but it used to always have a bunch of people there. Sunday's the lot would be packed. After they closed they opened up an Asian food restaurant. We finally decided to try the place many years after. A real DUMP. We like to play some video poker when we go out. That place had the career poker machine players there. Food wasn't bad for good old chow mien, fried shrimp/rice, basic American Chinese. When the rona hit, and after, their parking lot turned into a homeless camp. But, they put a "Homeless Service Center" in behind the place. so what would they expect. Don't even know if they're open anymore.
The one in Oregon City closed because of a dispute between the owner and the corporation. He shut it down and walked away. If that building was used for another restaurant, and it could have been, it was for a fairly short time. The building was torn down and it's been a vacant lot for a very long time.
Lani Louies in Milwaukie
That was the Chinese restaurant Dad liked. We lived a couple miles south off of McLoughlin. A friend that I didn't know at that time worked there as a busboy/dishwasher. I heard many things derogatory about the results of health inspections years later, but we enjoyed the food and no one ever ot sick from going there. :D

And Denny's got real bad too. But for whatever reason, the two that I frequent got magically better.

Then today, this was the headline...

One time during covid, I don't recall which year, but the Shari's off 185th/Tanasbourne, when the parking lot was full of homeless, I was walking to the door and a fat mouse, not quite a rat, ran to the door and acted like it was waiting for me to open it. No fear.

That was it for me, but I felt bad for the workers. They couldn't help what was going on outside. I would have been more off put, but I've seen worse in Canada at an upscale restaurant. I looked up the reviews after and many comments were, what can you do (about the mice)? The kitchen is off an alley.

Elephant & Castle

Long gone now, it was on the corner of 2nd and Washington in SW Portland (by the Morrison Bridge).

Funny, I ate a dozen times at that one, Pearl City (Oahu - also closed now) and Victoria BC, but never managed to visit the one in San Diego when I lived there for 25 years.

British pub food, fish & chips, Guinness, darts, etc. I miss it.

Ancestry Brewing in Tualatin Bro. Fish & Chips are excellent. Also try Stickmen. They have Axe-Throwing. :)

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant .

When I was in Jr high Farrell's was the place for kids Birthday partys. They'd bring out a big bowl of every kind of ice cream with every kind of topping on a stretcher called the Portland zoo for the table of kids to eat. Big production with bells and whistles running around the restaurant.

Wen Dad worked downtown, this was one of his favorite lunch places. I remember going there a couple of times.

I think so much of it is not about restaurants. It's about failing America.

Businesses have not survived covid. Folks learned how to not work, and businesses are unable to hire and/or keep employees.

Businesses cannot survive the accepted and even encouraged shoplifting. And there are whole sections of places like Portland that the old time businesses have escaped.

And taxes and inflation are killing businesses. Families are unable to afford all the eating out and playing they were accustomed to.

And Shari's has been a target for the homeless community. The Shari's at Delta Park is just plain scary just to get out of your car and walk to the door. And then have to step across vomit and garbage entering that door. Yuck.

You see, Oregon govt have decided that Administration, State School funds, "Other Education", and "Human Services" are all worth more of the budget than Economic Decelopment, and that Public "safety", and "All Others" are worth more than Natural resources. :(

And they wonder why businesses are leaving Oregon, why restaurants are closing, and why people are staying home.
