Der Rheinlander .
Sadly, Widmer Gast Haus too.
Back in Rhode Island there's a local chain of sandwich places called Walt'z Roast Beef, yup slow oven roasted roast beef sandwiches was their claim to fame. Not that crappy, highly processed roast beef Arby's serves, but real, tear apart roast beef like you'd make at home…

Where's the drool emoticon?

Oh yeah, one more-

How could I forget Farrells Ice Cream Parlor? I made a pig of myself there
There was a Farrels in Southfield, Michigan that we went to in high school. When I lived near Tillamook and Grand, I would take my kids to the last remaining one at Lloyd Center, just for the nostalgia. I could see the excitement in their eyes when the birthday bunch rolled around.

How did you get a picture of my ex... wait nevermind, I didn't have my glasses

Well, as of today, I'm missing Shari's. Not because the food was particularly good, but my good friend John Bergquist's dad started the chain and Shari's is my autistic son's favorite place to eat. He's not taking the news well...

Is Camp.18 still around on the way to the coast?
Still around, haven't stopped in for several years now. Last time we did stop was probably 5 or 6 years ago, the food was unimpressive. Nothing like the first few times we stopped.

I've noticed the last couple of years there's always a full lot on the way back from the coast. Perhaps things have improved again.

Not a specific establishment, but I also miss the whole sole proprietor corner diner concept. Where, for a reasonable amount of pocket money, you were assured to get a bottomless cup of coffee and a generous portioned meal to fill your gut. Eggs came out of a shell, bacon was fatty, a steak was a steak... and you may not know exactly what's in the blue plate stew or meatloaf... but it was always more than edible, filling and affordable.

Pappy's Greasy Spoon in Canby still fits this description. It is wonderful.

This is exactly how my son and I felt about our visit to the Cheyenne Cafe in Joseph this year. We don't make it over to that part of the state very often, so we go there every time we do. Usually just once during bow season because we hunt about 40 miles away. For the past couple of years we couldn't get in because it was too crowded. Last year we were prepared to wait for a table until the woman standing next to my son told him they had been waiting 40 minutes already, so we bounced. This year we got in and seated without waiting. Well, we left about an hour and twenty minutes later after a less than splendid meal. Then to top it off, I missed the evening hunt due to a queasy stomach. It didn't catch up to my son until the next morning, when he stayed in camp for the same reason.

It's really too bad. This was our "go-to" place for many years. I think since Covid, they seem to have trouble keeping a full staff. We may give them another try next year, because the food used to be top notch. But then again, maybe not.
