Hey fellas. I just bought an AR with a 14.5 inch barrel. It has pinned and welded muzzle break and wow, it's really loud and has a lot of blast. I'd like to replace it with something that sends the blast away which I think is called a linear compensator. Is this going to be expensive to have a gunsmith switch this out? Would it be cheaper to buy a whole new barrel?

What muzzle device is on it? Some companies make "blast shields" that mount to muzzle devices the same way suppressors do. Depending on the device that may be an option.

Not worthwhile to have someone do.

Might want to have it engraved for NFA now (~$50), then file for SBR in January.

Then remove the pin & weld (or have it removed) after approval. Put whatever you want on there...

If it's pinned and welded, a smith will have to grind it off and redo the pin/weld so yeah, some cost involved. Definitely cheaper than a new barrel though, unless you were already looking for an excuse to swap.

Getting a suppressor is another avenue to consider. My 10.5" 5.56 is really loud. But with a 7.62 suppressor it's not loud. If you have other guns getting a flow through 7.62 suppressor will cover .308, 5.56, 300 BLK etc. with 1 can, thus making them all quiet (unless you are shooting them at the same time of course). Huxwrx Ventum flow through (no barrel length restrictions) is $669. Many others out there also.
