The advantages of the 338 Federal are the heavier bullets, and less recoil, in addition to the short action. It is certainly NOT a replacement for a 338 Win Mag or the 340 Roy.

It is sort of like a 30-06 in the 338 class, when compared to the 338 Win Mag.

I've never used anything heavier than the -06 for elk, I think the 338 Federal is a step up without being punishing - particularly in a short, light rifle. I like the ,338 210 Nosler over the 180's that I use in my -06.
 
Bob. Several years ago I had a 308 Savage 99 bored and re-rifled to 338 Federal. The work was done by Jesse Ocumpaugh in Cottage Grove, OR.
