Another for PSTC. I started with near zero pistol experience and took the classes through PST 103. I came out the other side able to confidently and safely carry, draw from concealment, and place shots on target under stress (as much as can be induced in a class setting anyway). All instructors and volunteers were top notch, big kudos to Gabe White. I feel like it was money well spent.

The Wife did the Clackamas County public safety training center 101 class. It's several hours and they start for people that know nothing about shooting a hand gun. As I recall they start out with the blue plastic guns in a sit down class that moves to shooting the gun/ammo they bring to the class. It's a good way for a total newb to become comfortable handling a firearm.
