I have never bought bulk ammo online, but want to take advantage of some of the sales I have seen recently. I have only purchased at my local gun shop, and when I realize I don't know things I like to ask a forum like this instead of finding random answers from Googling. I usually buy what I shoot at the range, so really haven't paid attention to price per round, but lately the kids have been coming with me often, so my range days cost me 4x. I see a number listings on the gun/ammo deal site that look great PPR, but once in a while I don't even recognize the brand which begs caution.

I want to buy 1k+ of 9mm, .380ACP, and 22LR
These are all for range use, not looking for anything fancy.

Few questions:

1. Is there a general consensus of a go-to place or a couple places online for buying?
2. Are there typical price points that are acceptable, good deal, and buy as much as I can afford/stock up?
3. Are there brands that are go-to, brands to absolutely avoid?
4. Any local spots to buy at instead of online that would make sense?

Thank you in advance!

Step one, find the best price. Step two, buy as much as you can afford. There's lots of deals going right now, so if you're concerned with one being a scam site, look at the forums or ask here. Bimart usually has good prices right now. I just got non-sales price of $219/1k 9mm.

1: stick with well known online stores: LAX Ammo, Freedom Munitions, SG Ammo, offer new ammo in bulk. SG Ammo has great deals. Avoid remanufactured ammo.
2: just make sure the price of the order including shipping costs less than what you can find at your local gun store. Otherwise, but locally.
3: stick with established name brands like Remington, Federal, Fiocci, Winchester, Seller & Bellot etc. If your unsure of a brand, ask here.
4: Im not in Washington but any local gun store, Bi Mart typically has best deals.

I have gotten good stuff from sgammo.com.

Just checked for lowest current price for 1000 rounds of 9mm, got $204.80. I think the free shipping starts at $200.

And, if you ever travel to Oregon, hit a BiMart there and save yourself the Washington State Sales Tax (theft). I am fortunate to live just 30 minutes away from one. They frequently have great deals on ammo (and reloading components, too.)

I believe I recently saw $199.99 for a 1000 rounds in my local store.
BiMart had PMC Bronze .223 ammo for $7 per box (limit one CASE) per customer for Black Friday. That would have been $350 for 1k rounds, tax free in Oregon. If I wasn't fully stocked with handloads, I would have jumped on it.

Use ammoseek.com to find whos got the best deals then sort by shipping with a rating higher than 8 so you dont get raked over the coals with shipping.

But honestly, if you have a bimart close they almost always have the same or better prices than you see online.

I try to buy recognized name brand bulk ammo. Federal, Remington, fiochi, Winchester, cci (blazer) and sellier and bellot are all good choices. Consider the shipping price into the cost when buying on line and i know it's been mentioned several times but you can't beat a bimart sales price. I just ask them for the bigger box when it's on sale, that way im not fumbling 10-20 boxes though the checkout, just a single case!

Bi Mart 1k of 9mm 124 gr Norma for $218 I am going again in the morning to buy the rest that they have on hand

Well, I look at the ammo itself. I prefer copper or brass jacketed vs plated for center fire rounds. This is especially important when you have a ported barrel because the plated stuff will have the metal sheer off. I also don't use plated in center fire revolvers.

As far as 22 LR, I do use copper plated vs lead. It's just cleaner.

Recently, I bought 2K rounds of Aguila Super Extra copper plated round nose $0 grain for $102.00. I got those from Black Yawk Armory. It took 10 days to get to Oregon from Iowa, but it was worth the wait.
'
Keep in mind that ammo must go either FedEx or UPS ground. The Aguila from black hawk was actually two cases, each bubble wrapped and placed inside of another box.

For center fire, BiMart recently had 50 round boxes of Winchester White Box 45 ACP for $14.99 a box. That's a smoking deal. If you are close to the Oregon border, cross over and find a BiMart or a Cascade Farm and Outdoor store. They are the same company. But Cascade Farm offers veterans a 10% discount on ammo, whereas BiMart does not. And neither will ship.

Sometimes Bass Pro has good deals. Sometimes. The offer veterans a 5% discount on ammo, and they do ship.

Also check out Lucky Gunner ammo. They have weekly sales on bulk ammo and single boxes. It changes every week. They do ship. A few months back I bought some zundewoid defensive ammo that was regular $29.00 per 20 round box and got them foer $10 a box. Also the had CorBon on sale for $13 a box. They do charge for shipping. Cabela's/Bass Pro usually doesn't if you spend at least 50 bucks. Some types of ammo will land you a $15 hazmat fee per shipment though.

Thank you for all the tips! Ammoseek seems pretty useful. I found some Winchester 9mm from Sentry Ammo for 218.05+tax shipped, Winchester has a 15% mail in rebate that'll take off another $30. From what I can figure, under .20 per round seems like what I can call a good deal.

I had never heard of BiMart before. Unfortunately, I don't live near the Oregon border to take advantage of that store and no tax. The only one that is semi-near me is a ferry boat trip across the Puget Sound. I will probably check it out at least check it out as I do make a trip to the area once in a while. It looks like they are pretty scattered throughout the Northwest, just no location near Seattle proper... yet.

I agree with the information others have provided. The only thing I can add is regarding 9mm ammo. Herters is a name brand I trust, but I did not have good luck with some 100 round boxes of ammo I bought. I think the primers are a bit harder and I had several failure-to-fires with it. I tried it in three different pistols and had the same results. I typically had one or two ftf's per magazine. It does seem like all of them fired if I tried again (or sometimes again after that). I really haven't had that issue with the other mainstream brands - Blazer, Winchester, Remington, Sellior & Bellot. Oh, and I avoid the steel cased stuff. Had some lousy experience with Tula.

Use care & caution when checking ammoseek.

Meaning know who you are buying from.

I use SGammo as a comparator against ammoseek. IE where does SGammo pricing fall, compared to others on there.

If I'm not familiar with companies selling less than SGammo, -or many others online don't recommend "whatever company" without problems. Then there's shipping. Then there's specifically what I'm looking for -decent subsonic, or particular range blasting ammo, particular .22 lr etc etc…

SGammo is pretty in line generally, currently +/- a few cents per round (excluding door buster sales / & currently routine BiMart specials-which unfortunately sounds NA for you), however he carries a lot of variety normally. You can mix & match too to get the $200 min for "free" shipping.

So you can try some of various, then circle back for what works well for you all…
