The Browning 1911-380 Black Label is very well made, light, and slim. 85% of a full-size 1911. Very soft shooting. Can be found for around $500 if you look around. I have tried a lot of 380's and although it can be more costly than a lot of others, I haven't found better.
It's the only center fire my wife will shoot. I haven't yet found a 9mm she will shoot more than once or twice.
I also have a 1911-22 that I use to introduce first timers of all ages to shooting, and to save on 380 for some practice sessions because it is the same size and has exactly the same controls.
Some may not like mag safety (but it can be over-ridden if you push the mag release with the support hand when the mag is out).

Just bought new LCP 380 for mine. Fancy factory color and all. Great reviews, a little less muzzle lift than my 9mm, but small enough she'll actually consistently carry it.

$220 new, tough to beat.
