Starrett and the federation fired Kaempf's law firm the next day and told him to cease work on the group's behalf, claiming it had not authorized an appeal and that Kaempf lied to them when he said he hadn't filed the appeal.

Litzenberger found that Kaempf's comment was true because he filed but swiftly withdrew the appeal."

A bill of $126,000 is 252 hours at $500/hour. It seems dubious. If Startett signed such an open ended billing agreement, it was unwise.
Also, rather than ignore the bill, he should have filed a complaint with the Oregon State Bar.

Is this the same lawyer that had no idea what they were doing?
'They' as in the law firm OR 'they' as in no idea what OFF was doing?

Regardless it appears to me OFF didn't do a very good job 'vetting' this lawyer to make sure to make sure he was the right one for the job, AND with pro 2A proclivities.

No offense to religion in any respect or regard but If I were the one making the decision this part would have most likely caused me to look elsewhere.

John Kaempf is a trial lawyer who, for 33 years, has specialized in representing churches and religious schools in Oregon's courts.
