I know generally it will be: "why not just carry IWB". It's a personal preference. I'm looking to start once I get my CCL (appointment at Multnomah Co. sheriffs office 4/1)…I already have a Patagonia sling I love, and can easily modify to include a holster with fast access. Anyone else do something similar?

I carry this one all the time but, unfortunately, it is no longer available.

That was my first thought too. But in our geo bags from Patagonia, North Face, Osprey, etc… are so ubiquitous it'll blend in
Those will do a better job. Depending on how you present yourself. In the PNW sling bags a pretty common. I'm just not a fan of off body carry if on body is a viable option.

The gun industry bags are so blatantly obvious though.

The other piece that comes with the select carry sling bag I showed above in my video. For 1911 or smaller pistols. Combined you can carry a shorty rifle and pistol in seperate bags if you wanted. I separate them and never use the pistol one myself. The key feature is the hot pull tabs. Don't get one without hot pull tabs is my suggestion. Price was $38 for both as shown in several earlier posts and great deals section alert.

Another suggestion is don't listen to poeple that say all manufacturers make it look like there is a gun. They are wrong and don't know what they are talking about. Some look like ordinary sling bags. For example the one ha556 shows above. Doesn't look like a gun at all.

IMO smaller sling bags and fanny packs scream "gun". If you're going to carry off body consider a larger sling bag like the Vertx Commuter. Whatever you choose aim for it to be the size of a normal backpack, no exterior molle, and in non-tactical colors, so it blends in. Gun people will probably be able to guess what's in it but the average person will not.

Agree on the non tactical and non molle. Never had anyone ever give me a second look due to carrying non tactical sling pack. Despite its ability to hold 3 PCCs (or 1 sbr + 2 PCCs) if desired. ;) And no I don't carry 3 guns in it. But a person could if they wanted to, plus one pistol in the front pouch (I don't carry the front pouch, it's detachable and can be worn on its own if someone wanted).

Depends on what I'm carrying. This will fit a 8.5" .308 mp5, 10.5" 5.56 Brn-180, or pretty much any PCC with a folding stock.

Wow, talk about synchronicity... I'm watching the UFC fight in Mexico City and right when I saw this post Steve Erceg walked out to the Octagon with this as his walkout music.

Jung's Synchronicity: "...events that coincide in time and appear meaningfully related, yet lack a discoverable causal connection."

This is the bag I use and it's excellent...for a smaller bag. I like it because it's small and streamlined but still big enough for a relatively large gun. I carry a 4.25" M&P Core with a red dot. It also doesn't scream tactical/shoot me first, if you go with one of the basic colors.

Note too that the bag is only half the battle. I'm still mucking with the best way to mount the gun in the bag. It comes with a soft holster and I just don't care for soft holsters. So some questions become...

How do you mount a hard holster in the bag? And there are lots of options here from using a simple velcro piece with sticky adhesion, to something like a G Code RTI wheel or similar Safariland QLS, to some type of molle attachment, etc.

And do you want to use a dedicated holster that never leaves the bag or do you want a means to take the holster off your belt and mount it in the bag so that the gun never has to leave the holster?

Keep in mind that if you are going to carry a bag like this on your back, the gun will likely be in an upside down position when you're wearing the bag on your back. So your retention solution needs to be strong enough to support this...but not too strong so that it impedes your draw.

And I mention this because I've seen lots of talk on off-body bags over the years, but not much talk on these types of issues. Thus, when you get a bag, the fun is only beginning. And there may be more things to buy than just the bag itself. :)

Great callouts! I'm actually working through some ideas. First I'm going to test is modifying the interior pocket by reinforcing with extra nylon and then affixing an iwb holster that would be intended to stay in the bag. That way it can be held in place but also retrieved easily.

Good questions. +1 to good retention on a dedicated holster for the bag - it's absolutely needed. When I carry in a sling bag I have a dedicated holster in the bag, and accept the risk of having to transition the firearm from one holster to another. Another option would be to use something like the Viktos Hookie Holster, which would allow you to move the firearm in its holster from your belt to the bag.
