OK I have been deep sea fishing exactly once and it was a group thing where a bunch of school bus drivers went out on a charter boat out of Garibaldi who's captain was the mechanics cousin or something so aside from driving the bus over so the rest of them could sleep or party I had nothing to do with organizing it. I did catch a 32lb Ling Cod as well as one other and a cooler full of really nice bottom fish. That was almost 30 years ago.

NOW towards the end of April my wife is going to a Cross Stitch retreat in Cannon Beach for 4 days. I'm not into her hobby. So I need to find something to do at the coast. We are going over in my Willys jeep so I can do some running around up and down the coast But on Saturday My son (who spent 10 years in the Navy most on board ship) is going to come over so we can go deep sea fishing. Just need to book the trip.

SO recommendations guys for who to book with for a trip for Ling Cod and Bottom fish. I know we will be part of a group boat which is fine. But with all the choices from say Garibaldi to Seaside any recommendations ?

I promise to show photos.

If the limits are still what they have been it isn't hardly worth the price of admission. If ya just want to go on a boat ride and catch a "few" fish then that's ok too. I have been out of Depot Bay a couple times, fun ride in and out of the harbor. Went out once on a small boat (I think there were 5 or 6 of us fishing for silvers). The skipper was a complete dick, just about had a mutiny on his hands. Good luck where ever you go.

For bottom fish, find the cheapest entry fee. I believe the rock fish limit was only five the last time I went out. It hardly seems worth it to me due to the fish size.

Not an Or guy but well tuned in to fishing up the coast in WA. I would find a recommended charter that does lingcod/black rockfish trips. Way I read your regs you could keep 4 blacks and 3 lings each. Maybe even do some razor clam digging if tides/seasons coincide. Would make for a decent seafood haul. Good luck

If you have never done it book a dory out of pacific city. Mark lytle is a hell of a guide
+ 1 pc is an awsome fishery and dory fishing is a riot! Hitting the beach is a blast! If you can, try to go when it's "warmer" every dory I've ever been in has been a wet ride but a hell of a time!

Personally I'd stay away from Depo Bay. Some seasons when the waters are particularly rough the charters never get out due to the short, narrow, and very rough channel, when the rest of the coast is doing just fine. One easily gets tired of waiting all season and "on call" watching others bring in the harvest.
For many years we had out best luck best times and great charters from the port of Ilwaca Washington. Not once a disappointment.
One year we were surprised to find a terrific Auto show at the port parking lot. Lots of cool old cars.
Speaking of many years, It has been just that since I've gone there so my choice may need updating by others.

I've done a few trips with Garibaldi Charters the last few years and always had a good time. Last time I took the whole family we came home with 20 rockfish, 3 lings, and 16 crabs. The near shore trips are definitely smaller fish. My last trip was a little further out and the fish were bigger. Sea conditions have been hit and miss in April. With the reduction in catch limits and increase in charter rates I have a hard time justifying it. But like I said, I've always had a good time.

I would like to thank you for being the first person to respond after having actually read my post.

Hope you find something and have a good time with your son. Fishing on rough seas with no bites sounds better than a cross stitch retreat
We have booked with Garibaldi Charters their deep sea Ling Cod and Bottom fish hopefully this old man can handle it LOL.

Late to the party, but we have been out several times with the Siggy G in Garribaldi. Father-son crew who work hard for you. Drop crab pots on the way out, pick 'em up on the way in.

When l hear "deep sea fishing" l am thinking like 1200-2000 feet of water but you are talking about a regular rockfish trip. It would be better to wait until May 1st and do a halibut trip, otherwise see about a long leader rockfish trip were you can keep 10 instead of the standard trip were 4 is the limit

I heard the phrase quite often when living in the Northeast.
Not so much in the West.
