Need Advice on 22 Rifle

Hi friends,

I'll start by saying I am new to guns and seeking advice from those of you with experience and knowledge I have yet to have. I am a college student who enjoys the auto doors and recently, shooting. I have a Ruger MKIV and I love it, tons of fun. I want to buy a semi automatic rifle chambered in 22, mainly because as a college student I can't really afford to shoot large amounts of 9mm, 10mm or 45. I really want a Kriss vector 22… I know it doesn't have the super V but I got to shoot a Vector chambered in 45 and kind of fell in love. What are my other options? I can spend a decent amount, say $1000.

The Ruger 10/22 is the quintessential .22lr rifle. There are probably more after market accessories available for the 10/22 than all other semi-auto 22lr rifles put together. You can make it into what ever you want whenever you have the funds to do so.




I pity the fool that doesn't have a 10/22.

As popular as the Ruger 10/22 is....
It doesn't do anything for me.
I've owned a few...but always sold or traded 'em off.

That said...
They work well...shoot well...and there is lots you can do with 'em accessory wise.

My vote would be for a Remington Nylon 66 rifle.
Light...easy to shoot and maintain.

Find an older Marlin 60 and it will outshoot most guns stock and you can get them for around $150-200.

Second choice for me would be a Henry lever rifle. They are a hoot to shoot.

Everyone and their cousin's cousins have 10/22's and while they do have a lot of aftermarket parts, imo, you have to upgrade them significantly to make them decent.

If you want a Lamborghini then look at the Volquortzen (spelling) and spend a little more for a race gun from the factory.

If it were me I would focus on getting an inexpensive suppressor and then buy only guns with threaded barrels. Such a difference shooting 22lr suppressed with subsonics. For example here is what it sounds like shooting indoors (btw that rifle, a bolt action armscor m14y, costs $120 new out the door):

Since you love your MK, the 10/22 would be my first suggestion. The basic stock model is going to be great. If you want to spend more money on it the great part about them is you can add options as you wish to make it anything you want. New trigger is always a great start. Really hard to go wrong with one to start with.

Accuraccy and speed. Video short from the internet. Mcarbo trigger spring kit is $26 and brings trigger pull weight down to below 2 lb. Last 22 I would sell probably.

I too am not a big fan and only have 1 ruger 10-22. But mine has class....1966 all original with a mannlicher stock.

I love the look of that stock. I've had 3 10/22s and sold them all. I found them rather boring. Maybe due to the slow action I don't know, not sure why. All were reliable with ruger mags. I never modified them and I totally understand how that could make them much more interesting.

Not sure if it would interest you, but as of 5 days ago, a 3D printable forced reset trigger was released for the Ruger 10/22. I'm not sure if it's legal in Oregon, I'm not a lawyer, blah blah blah.

Anyways, you didn't hear it from me...

Edit: They're illegal in Oregon. Whoops. Guess that's one thing Washington has on you gun-wise

Love a good Ruger 10/22, my go too 22lr is my Tippmann M4-22 for general everything. For basic precision, a Ruger American Rimfire with stainless bull barrel.

If you have 1k to spend, I'd recommend a simple 10/22 with threaded barrel and get a 22lr suppressor... My favorite 22lr can is a Rugged Oculus 22, its also good for .17hmr, 22mag, and 5.7x28.

I hate to be a parrot but I'd say 10/22 and a silencer as well. After the initial investment there's not many things cheaper and more fun then a silenced .22!

I forgot about hammerli/walther tac1. It's same as hk416 basically. I've never owned one but have/had same innerds in many guns such as hk g36, hk 426 pistol, colt m4. Shares same high quality 30 round mags as beretta arx160, hk g36, hk 416, colt m4 which can be bought from Beretta for $12.
