Over on the "What's Going On In Shipping" youtube site, an image related to a discussion of at-sea replenishment showed a seaman using what looks like a M14 modified with a M87 line throwing kit. I searched and found this discussion of line throwers which has interesting details:

I was a shot-line gunner during unreps while on the Camden (AOE-2). We mostly used a smooth bore 45-70 break open single shot unless the weather sketchy and then used the M-14 with the grenade attachment.

For me, line throwing guns are just like 26.5mm, 37mm, and 40mm launchers; something I would love to have, but that I have no articulable reason to own.

So far I just own a 26.5mm. I think that makes me a 75% responsible person. Seems pretty accurate.

@oremike I was on the Seattle AOE-3, we used the M-14, right up until her last unrep.

DirtyBird use a bow and arrow with a light string attached, then pull over the heavier line, not as far but definitely quieter.
