The wife brought this one home yesterday.
It was about 1/2- 3/4 the size of a basketball.
Cauliflower Mushroom is the common name.
Pretty good tasting and would make a good "noodle" dish or a beef stroganoff.

I couldn't believe this thread popped up! For the time ever my yard has sprouted mushrooms.
White ones and little brown ones. How the heck does anyone know what is edible or... not healthy..?
Is there a general rule of thumb?

Yeah, Never eat any wild mushroom without a POSITIVE ID. And if there's any doubt, or any info indicating SOME people having issues with a mushroom, try only a little bit first. And wait 24-48 hours.

Two books. "All The Rain Promises"

Those are some crazy cool fungus! We've found them from time to time. Never tried them, I've usually given them away.

It's more the hunting of them that gets me out of town for a day.

Been here for 40+ years and played with a buncha' fungus. Now we just get the fun out of looking at them and knowing what most of them are by name. And giving the good ones to people that love them.

When I first posted this photo, there was a varied opinion of their safety in consumption. Some folks said, in moderation, they can be okay.

No thanks.

It appears to be Amanita Muscaria, which if that's the case, it's the ibotenic acid present that needs to be converted to muscimol through decarboxylation which is simply applying heat either through brewing a tea or through dehydration.

There's a long history of this mushroom if you care to look around a bit linking it to Nordic shamanic practices and Christmas as we know it. Some postulate that it is the soma that is mentioned in the Hindu Rig Veda.
