Movie: "The Irishman"

Touted as one of 2019's best movies.

It isn't.

robert deniro, al pacino and Joe Pesci play the lead roles in this dud.

Pesci is far too old for the part he plays.

deniro with his permanently dour scowl woodenly plays a part better suited for a much younger man, phones in the role.

Amazingly, pacino finally stops being so ham handed an actor in his role.

The movie likes to pretend it's a great gangster movie in the vein of "The Godfather".

It isn't.

It's tired, pretentious and frankly...boring.

I love gangster movies and most of the work of De Niro. Tried this one; was amazed and the technological feat of making them look younger. Other than that, got so bored, I turned it off Netflix and wandered away to other matters. I'll probably try again. Or not.

I watched it at work, in between doing what they actually pay me to do. So watched it over the course of a couple days. It was for me OK, sure not expecting it to win any awards. I have always liked the actors who were in lead rolls. I too was impressed with the way they were able to make Robert look younger for the early days of it. I have to guess they must have put out a good bundle of cash on it.

Haven't finished it because it isn't that engaging.
However, what I have seen of it so far (Hoffa just got out of prison) make me think it's developed as another angle into how Hoffa died as told by a chump in the mob (DeNiro). No spoilers, I can watch it when I have nothing else to do.

Well you already know how it ends for Jimmy Sr, so that's easy. I can't remember how many movies I have seen now with another take on what happened to Jimmy Sr. IIRC seems like a few aging gangsters over the years have claimed to know where he ended up. Only thing we know for sure is he is dead.

One thing, I did like was all the schmaltzy music though it didn't affect the movie like the music has/does in other mob movies...it was just kinda fun to listen to old 50/60 favorites...

Looks great on paper... all the right names for a movie like this.

Haven't sat through the whole thing yet, dull as dirt.

Maybe, someday, I'll finish it... probably.

Until I read this thread I'd actually forgotten that I'd watched it (in part).

A bunch of geriatrics pretending they've still got the acting chops mouthing a drearily written, moribund script.

Joe Pesci, who I like, has morphed into such an old man that he's as threatening as an anorexic vegetarian. He 'used to be' scary...sadly no longer. Unless rest home refugees scare you...

Same for the other two mopes...

I'm reminded when movie execs miscast a wrinkled old guy as a romantic lead with some beautiful 25 year old.

Totally improbable and sad.

I haven't watched a movie for 10-15 years for three reasons;
1. I will not contribute one cent to the livelihood of those liberal buffoons.
2. I haven't heard of a movie that's worth two hours of my time just to sit and watch it.
3. One more reason is that a book will make better visuals in my mind than any movie ever has.

A book in my hands is comforting and enjoyable for me.
Sitting in a theater next to someone that smells bad and won't stop talking isn't.
Don't watch movies on tv because, well, we don't have a tv. That's enjoyable and
comforting too.................

I watched it at home on Dish satellite.

Does my watching contribute to hollyweird coffers...don't know, probably in some convoluted way...

I find my energy output good for one day working out in the yard with say a chainsaw among other things which in turns wears me out - thus I watch tv until I recover to do it all over again.

I too love to read, but me old peepers tire easily even using my e-reader Nook on it's highest size text, so I do a fair amount of tv watching.

Much like you, I recoil at the thought of attending an actual movie theater with it's concomitant negatives i.e., having to sit cheek by jowl with the unwashed masses who can't stop talking either to each other or on their phones or pushing on the back of my seat and on and on and on...

It was ok. The problem was that it was an hour too long. I had to watch it over 3 sittings.

As far as Netflix movies, I actually liked 6 Underground. Stupid explosions and mindless violence.

Yep, the first 15 minutes was nothing but crashes and explosions. I think it was the most per minute crashes of any movie I have seen.

I enjoyed it. Last summer I read Jim Marrs book Crossfire about Kennedy. The Unions/Hoffa figure prominently into many of those theories. I didn't know Hoffa was openly contemptuous and disrespectful of the Italians. The guy was an egomaniac.

In other words, none of them have done anything worth a squat in the last couple of decades.

However, as for most recent relevance....I would state that Pesci was OK in "Casino" and "Meet the Parents", (as a comedic role) De Niro pulled it off alright.

Bingo. I put this on an 30 minutes in I was bored to tears. I cannot even tell you what, if anything, happened. Turned it off and never went back.

I admit I went in skeptical. These same tired actors playing the same tired Italian gangsters is beyond over-played. What new ground was going to be laid or broken?

Casino, Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale, The Godfather, Lethal Weapon (Peshi), Hoffa, and many countless others.

And the thousands of caricature jokes about these same characters.

Yawn. Was anyone really clamoring for another Italian mafia movie?

Mostly agreed. I used to like De - Zero. He has ruined, literally ruined, his legacy. He has starred in the best action and gangster movies so has an impressive resume (Heat, Ronin, Casino, Goodfellas). Never cared for Pachino much, but he delivered in Heat bigly. I generally find Peschi annoying but he also delivered in his Casino and Goodfellas roles.

Is that the Ryan Reynolds handsome and sardonic billionaire vigilante thing? I watched that yesterday.

Big CGI budget in that one.

I should have known better than to get any kind of revved-up for The Irishman. There was another Pacino/DeNiro movie on not too long ago where they both play cops... disappointing and dreary AF.
