Guys while we have fallen a LONG way we are NO WHERE NEAR this yet. Anyone really think they are just going to tell Fred's keep that store open? :s0140:
Fred's would just laugh, lock the doors and be gone. WTF are the law makers going to do? Send Cops to arrest the CEO?
I largely agree with your thoughts. I guess I just get more nervous all the time. I've lived in Oregon all of my life (almost 65 years) and never dreamed we would have the gun control measures we do. And rent controls. Then nationally there's the election of Democratic Socialists, including the mayor of NY. And in California they are talking about taxing folks that want to leave the state. So, when you say, "nowhere near this yet", the word "yet" gives me chills.

Yeah buddy, I've become a cynic. I know and accept that fact. :s0092:

Yes called WARN.
A WARN notice is just that, a warning to let dot gov know it is going to happen. But other than providing advance notice, I don't think it otherwise places any restrictions on a company's abiliity to do so.
Plus they are "claiming" they are offering all their employee's positions at other stores. Since I don't work for them not sure how this works. I would "guess" the Co will either just not invite some of the problem children or offer them a post in some other state or such.
Since most retailers seem to be short handed these days, they will probably have no trouble finding open positions at other stores for those employees willing to transfer. I know the Freddy's near me is always short of people.
For any who out out of a job they will of course get their UE here.
As long as they are not fired for cause, they will be eligible for funemployment. There will always be a certain fraction who will select that option over transfer.

I don't know if WA is the same but I know Oregon is an "at will" State..meaning employers can fire workers at will, for any cause or no cause, except for contracts or State employment laws ( ). So it may be much more difficult to qualify for unemployment benefits from the State, especially for "seasonal" and probationary positions.

Edit. Looks like WA State is also an "at will" employment State.

Yep, always are when this happens. WA is an "At Will" state. So anyone can fire anyone but, if they want to fight the UE claim they have to REALLY show cause here. The Fred's are also Union so I suspect there is something in the contract covering just this kind of thing. As more of these stored pack it in though I would "hope" it will get a little easier to find workers. Couple times were I work I ended up working some LONG damn weeks while we tried to replace someone.

Anyone can fire people here but, if the employer cant' show REAL cause the worker gets UE here. Last few people we fired at the one place I work we gave them untold 2nd chances till we finally showed them the door. They of course tried to collect UE. Couple of them actually got it for a month or so until Wife got the appeal through and won. Then the state goes after the former employee's to pay that money back :s0140:

It is not difficult to qualify for funemployment in OR, as long as one has worked the necessary number of hours in a given year and was not fired for cause. Seasonal employment is not a barrier to collecting, again as long as the necessary number of hours was worked and the layoff at the end of the season was due to lack of work. I used to know a guy who worked construction every summer and collected funemployment every winter year after year. That was his gig.

Employers often don't like it when a former employee collects UI because it causes the insurance premiums they pay the state to increase. The more people they layoff, the higher their premiums go. So if someone quits of their own volition or is fired for cause, and files for UI, they will fight the claim.

Of course, there is no free anything. This is why when we fire someone we jump through the hoops to keep them from collecting. The crap that some can get away with though and still collect is amazing here. Its why when we fire we have to have a butt load of documentation just to keep them from soaking us by collecting UE for as long as the state will keep sending the checks.

You are supposed to be actively seeking work while collecting UI, but states are not very diligent as far as checking on this. Often all one has to do is check a box saying "yes" in response to the question "Were you actively seeking work in the week prior to this claim?" On line filing has made fudging even easier.

This state, assuming nothing has changed, you call a # every week and with push buttons acknowledge that you are not working, and that you are looking. They tell you to save your work search since they can call you in to check. Its SUPER simple to do enough to keep them happy. While back local news found out a bunch of people who were in jail were collecting. State said it would take a LONG time for them to figure out how to stop this. They just don't care. This little fun and games though does hurt the state. Large employers look at things like this when they decide to locate or stay. One thing the left is really good at is killing the goose who lays those eggs. Look at what WA has done to Boeing alone. They chased off a LOT of damn money from them over the years. Yet people keep putting the same people back in office so we get just what we deserve 🤬

Amazon LOVES this. The more "hassle" they make it to buy stuff the more people just pull out their phone and order it. What is funny to watch is as stored where theft gets so bad that the place is not worth keeping open. Then the same people who supported the stealing scum SCREAM that they have no place near them to shop.
Or those people just burn the store down.

Late last year one of the big Fred's in a crap part of town announced they were done and shutting it down. It was a testament to just how ignorant so much of the population here really is. Some law makers were spouting how they just did not want to keep it open out of greed. A BUNCH of morons were circulating a petition for force the store to stay open. They really believed they could get a law passed that the Co could not close a store. Really kind of sad but explains why we have one party rule here. :(

That was the Gateway Fred Meyer on NE 102nd just below Halsey several blocks. It's ON the Max route. I live close enough that we used the store there at times. They also closed the Kohls store that was directly adjacent in the parking lot of Freddie's. BOTH of those suffered incredible shop lifting, thieving, from the dregs of potland. Back 20 years ago, before Portland became nothing but a Pot-Land it was a vibrant shopping center. It wasn't such a "Crap' part of town until the city abandoned the businesses in this city for "Wokeism".

I have much history in that area. Back in the fifties and sixties, this was such a vibrant part of the Portland community. And actually it was the new upscale. It's where rich kids lived while I lived in southeast Portland.

And that it has been allowed, even encouraged, to decay to the its present condition is testimony to what folks want, and it is truly a symptom of a terrible sickness in the community. The civic leaders are okay with this, as giving these bums stuff for free and encouraging the decay, is just that many more votes for the woke politicians.

If only prosecutors and judges weren't 'pro-criminal'...
They only get away with this dream of theirs because people keep putting them back into office. It really is a mental disorder with a lot of the people. They turn the places they live into something that looks like the 3d world. Then they support the people who made the mess and ask them for more. Some kind of mass psychosis that has been amazing to watch. One thing these morons never seem to grasp or notice is the people doing this NEVER live among the mess they make. They make sure their families do not get exposed to it. :s0092:
