The main hospital in the Eugene Springfield area does not have metal detectors, but the last few times I was there they did have security. They saw my carry knives, and asked me to put them in my car. Good thing I didn't lift my shirt.

Not only metal detectors, but some (Salem) have more advanced technologies that they are using for scans (i.e., they can tell the difference between a wad of keys and a knife). I feel so much safer knowing unarmed 'guards' are disarming anyone who might be able to help out or at least defend themselves if it hits the fan.

I honestly feel sorry for any unarmed security at entrances anywhere who are tasked with disarming people. The sound of the gun from their murder will serve as an alarm to others about what is going on. To me, you could argue gross criminal negligence on the part of those who hire them for this task. I have nothing against the people there, but it's not a good job to have.

when did this start?
A little more than a year ago.

had this experience last month taking my father to the ER in Portland. Security in ER was cool, but 70 year old lady in main hospital was a @#@# C#@$# made me take my watch and belt off worse than TSA.

I quit the employ at the aforementioned hospital in 2019. A year or so before that, some deranged man came in through the ambulance bay with a rifle. FWIW it was unloaded.
Ever since then they have No Weapons signs and security.
I kept a small gun safe in my locker and stored it there during my shifts.

I was surprised too. When my wife lost half the pad of her finger they wand' me down after going through the metal detector then checked my wife's purse. Apparently something I was wearing set the detector off.

After dealing with the incompetent nurse that mistakenly tossed out the half of her finger we needed reattached and god complex ER doctor that gave us massive amounts of attitude for no reason at all.. I get why they now have guards and metal detectors.. the frustration I felt that day I could imagine in others would cause some to do some terrible things. Not that they deserve it at all.. but I can see why it's a high risk. Keizer, that day sucked.

All of the Salem Health facilities have unarmed guards and metal detectors. One of the guards called the cops on me because I asked how he liked working unarmed at a place where the bad guys all knew that absolutely nobody had a weapon. I said these places are soft targets.

Cop didn't say anything to me, just watched as I left after getting my business done.

I always goad the help too, especially when placing an order at the drive-thru.

Some larger places have had the screening for many years. Each time there is another "incident" more of them spend the money to put up the screening. Of course as always the problem is those who want to go in and cause mass problems don't care about laws. The screening seems to make people "feel better" :(

I've never seen any metal detectors at the Portland VA, but there are signs posted about "weapons".
As Federal property if you're caught with a gun or knife you can kiss your a** goodbye.

Many have metal detectors at main entrances with security present but small unknown entrance/exits are not checked or manned. So do not expect everyone in the facility to be disarmed after you have put your weapon in the vehicle and cleared security.....

Youd think someone who works in security would understand why metal detectors are installed...
But this is Oregon, we vote for more gun free zones.
