So I got two Medium ALICE packs locally; decided to see how best I could utilize the U shaped Medium MOLLE pack frame (DEI #1609) with the Medium ALICE. Basically all one needs to do is do the LC-2 strap attachments a little differently.. this method pulls the frame up, and with the use of the pack's metal loops, pulls the pack closer to the shoulders, stabilizing the whole thing. It can carry the loads far more comfortably than with the metal frame; and at a lighter weight than the FILBE frame or Mystery Ranch's NICE frame. Here are the instructions in photo format. Note; this only works with the long LC-2 Enhanced ruck straps that have removable upper straps.
First, thread through the metal loop as usual, then thread the tail end into one of the horizontal slots on each side of the frame
Put the tail end back under the frame pad
Pull the tail end to secure the frame into the pocket
Insert the tail end into the metal loop again;
It should look like this
Thread the tail end into the shoulder pad's horizontal webbing slot
Finish as standard with the friction buckle.
Now for the bottom; pretty much same as standard ALICE/MOLLE packs
Loop the lower frame straps through one of the horizontal slots,
Finish as standard, then loop lower shoulder straps through the vertical slots, again as standard.
Belt is from a MOLLE II ruck; mounts the exact same way. One could opt for the original, lighter weight 4" wide belt that comes in ACU or OCP (similar to multicam); if color matching is not necessary
The ruck as assembled, with 2 woodland canteen pouches on the belt
The frame slots on the bottom is almost in line with the ALICE webbing, one could lash a pad or a compression bag there for sleeping bags or the like.
