Hello all. If this would be a better thread for the gunsmiths section let me know but I thought I'd start here. I'm looking for info/experience on taking the rail off a Ruger Marlin 1895 SBL and putting on buckhorn sights. I don't care much for peep sights and the ghost ring is cool unless I'm trying to make longer shots accurately. Side question, Is it possible to take that rail off and mount scope rings directly to the receiver? Or a shorter rail? Just with this rail the ghost ring sight puts the scope too high and I have a crappy check weld. Any links would be appreciated as well. IMG_9939.jpeg

There should be a rear sight dovetail under that rail, yes and yes to your questions. That polished blued scope is a classic Marlin optic right there, but agree Id put that on a shorter rail on the receiver itself.

Amazing. I love this older Leupold scope I think it looks great on it and love having magnification.

The older Leupolds with the polished blued finish are classics. I have a circa 1980s Marlin 336, had a Bushnell 3x9 on it forever that finally died a couple years ago and luckily I had a spare older Leupold lying around to replace it, the worn blued Marlin with the old blued Leupold keeps the vintage matching nicely, though the scope is more for a bolt rifle and a bit much for a 30-30 but its all I got. Hard to find the old Leupolds used anymore ideally Id like an old Leupold polished blued LPVO. Your scope would be perfect, note my short receiver rail scope mount and the original buckhorn sights your contemplating.

Early '80s…Marlin started installing the cross bolt safety in 1984.
Good to know. Mine has the cross bolt safety but it has a piece of black tape over it because its so loose it always turns on safe when simply carrying it.. so its hard to see in the pic. I think it was around 86 or 87 when my dad gave me the rifle to hunt deer. My older brother still has his 336, without the safety.

Gotcha, at first glance I didn't notice and thought it lacked that "feature".
