The "JM stamped" guns were built when Marlin was their own company, much better quality. The newer (I think 2002+), are not stamped JM, but I think they are stamped "REM", because Marlin was bought out by Remington. The stamp is on the left side of the barrel, right where the barrel and reciever meet.
