Decided to roll my own in 2022 so purchased a carbon HNT26 Chassis System from MDT Defense. Now something interesting has happened. The forend sling mount came unscrewed. I was lucky my reaction time caught the rifle before the barrel slammed into the ground. Note the picture below. Silly me, I thought they would have secured something like a sling mount with Loctite or similar to prevent it from just unscrewing. That kind of failure could not only be damaging to the rifle, but equally dangerous. Not that I've ever had cause to think about this one way or the other before since never seen this with any of my rifles. For near $2,000 you'd think MDT Defense could have done a little bit better than this. Or not. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from manufacturers these days...

Thats some BS right there...

Glad to hear neither you or the rifle got hurt in this failure.

Personally, I dont think your expectations are too high. You should definitely not have to worry about something like this on a $2k chassis...

Damn, at least the gods where watching and you caught the rifle. That is amazing. I hope anyone else with a sling will read this and check their set up. May save someone some real heartache.

Indeed. I'm actually thinking of checking all my sling mounts and Loctiting as needed. Going to be a helluva job, but shame on them the first time, shame on me if it ever happens with another one of my rifles again.

You've got me thinking the same thing!
Thanx for the info.

Yikes!! Nice save!

These days, it doesn't matter how much you spend. Even a 5K rifle can't be trusted to be as it should be. I've long since gotten in the habit of a full disassembly/reassembly right out of the box. It's more uncommon not to find anything from slightly wrong to needing a tweaking... than not.

An ounce of prevention and all....

This isn't unique to gun manufacturers. EVERYTHING is "get it done, get it done, get it done… are you done yet? Are you done yet? Are you done yet"?

Car manufacturers, electronics manufacturers, the construction industry…. the pressure to complete twice the work, with a quarter of the needed numbers of qualified workers in one half the time is tremendous in all industries.

That is kind of sad.

Other than that issue, what do you think of the stock? I have been eyeing the folder version for a bit.

That's what I have, the folder. I think the chassis is fine except for the magazine well. I purchased a metal AICS magazine from MDT at the same time and it rattles pretty badly. Had to dink around with it to make it silent for hunting. Other than that and the sling mount failure it's been good.

This is like how Boeing builds airplanes.
Since when did Boeing start building airplanes again??

Last I heard, more than 75% of their construction is outsourced, including the design and engineering, and those companies often further outsource to even smaller local companies.

I dunno if assembling plane kits qualifies as "building"... does it? I mean, I can glue an RC model plane together, but that doesn't make me an aeronautical engineer.

... and I've only had unscheduled rapid disassembly's twice.🤣

I had that happen with a Marlin Model 60 one time. I'd been out shooting, was getting my gear back out of the car. I slung the rifle over my shoulder and that's when one of the sling swivels decided to pull out of the wood. The rifle crashed onto the pavement behind me, landed right on the front sight. One week later it got stolen so I never had to fix it.
