Good choice for HD imo. My main HD gun is a 10.5" BRN-180. I would suggest a suppressor as 5.56 in that size is freakin' loud. Recently got one of these in 5.56 and it could possibly replace BRN-180 if it proves itself in testing.

Hk 53 is similar size to BRN-180 sbr when stock is folded:
Both are awesome "in the vehicle" guns as well. 300 BlK variants with suppressor are attractive options too. A simple bag is best for that imo but some fun options from the olden days:

I was wondering if you had any refs on subsonic hp or soft tip rounds for the shorty.

TBH, unless you're just looking for a new "toy" I wouldn't bother with anything under a 11.5" barrel length for life or death work. The CAR15 barrel length barrel (11.5") was determined to be "optimal" for ballistic effectiveness with enough dwell time to reliably cycle the action during CQB schituations.

I've never had a single malfunction with the two I've assembled and would trust my life on them.

Would 300 BO be better for something 10.5 to 11.5 inches?

I have a Kitty Kat upper i got in an evidence gun buy years ago, I think it may be a Olympic Arms, but it runs great(I was surprised), I put a Flaming Pig on it. its just a toy but its pretty fun.
