Does anyone have any experience with one of these systems? Basically, it involves a device implanted under your skin (in your upper chest) that will alter you body rhythms to 'fix' this.

I was appalled at the cost of this procedure (+/- $40k) but Happy wife, Happy life I guess. Of course this is before insurance would kick in. If anyone has done this can you throw in a ballpark figure of your net cost?

And of course, I don't snore! Never heard myself snore, and I have woken up in the night to listen but.....

Just asking....for a friend.

Had never heard of that but sounds interesting. Wife has to use one of those damn machines and some times I just can't sleep next to it. There are times I have to go sleep in the guest room over the damn thing. If they could fix this some other way it may well be worth it for both of us. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

I did read that it requires a certain level of something in order for an insurance company to pay. If you do research it closer I'd be interested to hear more.
Thx

I'll do for $100.
Seriously, I'd go to Mexico and get it done for cash. It's probably like $5000.

Has she tried a CPAP and/or a mouth guard?

And seriously on the mouthguard...the ex had severe apnea and was on a CPAP, but there is a certain type, I guess, where a special mouthguard will usually solve the problem. Needs to be made by a specialist dentist. But holy cow did it work well without the cumbersomeness/noise of a CPAP machine.

I can't fall sleep with my CPAP machine running. Haven't used it in years.

There are studies, though not large ones , that did have positive outcomes with this hypoglossal nerve implant system. But it is only indicated if someone has tried and failed a CPAP, so that means its going to be difficult to get insurance to cover it without doing traditional treatment first.

I'd probably recommend it to a patient if they had tried several things to fix the sleep apnea (weight loss, CPAP, etc) and had severe sleep apnea enough to be a health risk and if it was covered by insurance.

Its a crazy bit of a body hack though. The device tells when you are about to breathe in, sends a signal to the nerve that controls your tongue and tells it to protrude. I havent had any patients have it done yet, but I wonder if you can feel your tongue moving involuntarily every time you breath. Breathe in, tongue sticks out.

Perhaps that is why your wife wants you to get it? :D
