The man leading the effort to rename Pullman's Jefferson Elementary School is set to speak to the school board during their virtual meeting tonight.

Local resident Ben Emerson has launched an online petition at change.org to rename Jefferson Elementary. Emerson wants the name of one of our nation's Founding Fathers and our 3rd president removed from the school because Thomas Jefferson owned slaves.

Emerson has signed up to speak to the Pullman School Board during the public comment portion of their virtual online meeting tonight. Anyone can sign-up to speak to the board virtually during tonight's meeting. Each speaker is limited to 3 minutes. Pullman School District staff ask that speakers sign-up by 5:30 this afternoon. Trying to re-write American history in an effort to exact change is doomed to failure. Much as we hate to admit it, slavery was a legal institution for more than two centuries before Lincoln did the Emancipation Proclamation, and we added the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Those are facts. We even fought about the issue and sacrificed hundreds of thousands of lives...both black AND white...to put an end to it. We cannot run away from these things, and tearing down statues is only denying our history. The very minute...the very SECOND you try to deny your history as a nation and rewrite it somehow...you become a perfect employee for Joseph Goebbels and his Ministry of Propaganda. They did the same thing, but in a more primitive form. They did not have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or social media. They used book burnings, radio, and printed material.

"Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss..."

Banks and financial institutions have spent decades screwing hard-working Americans out of their homes, their savings, and caused the 2008 housing crash. Virtually no one went to jail over it, but the misery it caused had a ripple effect that is still being felt today. Do you believe in the American Dream? Do you think if you work hard your entire life that some big payoff should come your way in your golden years? Perhaps it will, but chances are greater that someone, somewhere, doesn't give a darn about your future and is looking to skrew you out of it somehow.

The truth of the matter in America is simple. Half the politicians in DC are in the pockets of the money boys, the greed masters, the drug companies who run their endless TV ads, the billionaires, the Wall Street boys. These are the folks who expect you to beat your head against the wall, produce as much as you can that they can sell at a profit, and work hard your entire life so they can reach a position of not having to worry when the whole thing collapses.

They will be fine. You will not. This is the thing that caused the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, and the rise of Communism.

The other half of these politicians are trying to change all that. This only proves that at least some Americans have a conscience.

Which side will win is still in doubt.

They had the meeting and the idiot spoke and said Jefferson was a racist, slave-owing child rapist and that a school shouldn't be named after him. Another speaker said that this was just a classic Marxist move to try and destroy our culture.

Only ten people showed up to support it one way or the other and it was evenly split; five for renaming it and five against.

Pullman School Board Members listened to public debate over possibly renaming Jefferson Elementary School during their meeting Wednesday night.

Local resident Ben Emerson has started an online petition to rename the school because Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Board members heard arguments for and against the idea during the open public comment portion of their meeting.

Emerson told the board that Jefferson's actions don't reflect the priorities of the Pullman School District. You can listen to Emerson's comment by clicking on the audio link below.

Local resident Thomas Vanwinkle spoke against renaming Jefferson Elementary pointing out that the petition is part of the Black Lives Matter movement whose leaders want to turn America into a socialist country.
