Neighbor gifted me one of these monstrosities the other day. Looks like they were maybe before their time. Does anyone have first hand experience with these internet search's seem few and far between. Mainly looking to see if I could get a H&r rifle or shotgun barrel like the Thompson rifles. Any info is appreciated

This is a VERY sturdy, very well made, and VERY accurate muzzleloader. Not exactly "traditional" in any sense, but the very idea of it is simplicity and utility.

A close buddy of mine hunted with his every year (even during highpower season) when we were in the Service together. I shot it a lot, and it was the gun that I learned muzzleloading with. This was in the '70's, and his gun was new then.

Edited to add: I cannot answer regarding conversion to centerfire. I believe such barrels would need to be fitted to that specific receiver (I don't think the HR handy rifles can switch, unless the extra barrel came WITH the gun originally.)

You see this as a 'monstrosity' ? And something 'Made before their time' ?

Do you have any experience with guns - of any type?

Ditto this:
In regards to the era it was built there weren't other break action muzzleloaders where now they are common. Although I'm new with muzzleloader admittedly I do stay current with modern firearms. Thanks for sharing your useful information.

While I don't particularly care for them....
I am more of a traditional muzzle loader.

I can say that...

They are a well built firearm and shoot well.
I have shot one that a friend has...and can't complain about the groups it shoots .
He uses a loading of 70 grains of 2F and a .45 caliber "T/C Maxi Ball " 245 grain bullet .

I can't say if one could interchange barrels...sorry.

This is probably the best source of info and H&R specific classifieds, scroll down to the H&R section

You likely won't be able to swap a modern rifle or shotgun barrel to it as the manufacturers I know of who make similar firearms machine the muzzle loading and centerfire offerings differently so they won't interchange.

Otherwise someone could acquire a modern rifle/shotgun without going through an FFL. Horrific, I know. I feel safer.
