So I'm looking at some lab puppies and I would like to have a bird dog/family dog which is hard to do sometimes if i remember correctly. I remember as a boy watching my dad training his German shorthair. But not much. So do any of you know of a good training program for dogs and humans lol

Retrievers make awesome all purpose dogs, easy to train for any thing you could want, and they are super family dogs even with specialised training! Some retrievers can be block heads and require extra effort and ongoing work to get them dialed in, but once it takes a set, your usually good to go!
I highly recommend starting puppy kindergarten right away, learning the basics and learning their place in YOUR pack! This can be a lot of fun and you should enjoy it too! Remember, long on the praise, short on the punishments, and every thing can be fixed with the proper application of love! :)

u mentioned training a German shorthair. Reminds me when I trained my English setter pup. I used this old crusty pointer book from the 1940s. The basics don't really change much over the years (I suppose the tools do though). Doing it yourself is really rewarding but does take a time commitment -and a good book.
