H&R Topper 12 gauge short stock $40

What I've got is an H&R Topper single shot, break open, I bought new when I was a kid and cut the stock to fit. It is now teeny for me. 3" chamber, full choke, no butt pad at all, no vent rib. This is an econo gun.

1 wee problem. With very heavy loads it will pop open on the recoil. It doesn't seem to deform the brass any, but it is startling. The recoil is equally startling on this feather weight gun. I'd have to imagine there's a latch sear worn in there somewhere.
