H&R's are great and the 16 ga is awesome You can safely use any 16ga ammo you can find.

I would shoot whatever chamber length is indicated...probably sticking with 2 3/4 in any case...and no steel shot.
Target loads shouldn't be a problem.

Love a good single shot shotgun...they make for a great grouse gun for sure.

Every gun shop or show I go to ...I am always on the look out for a nice one.
Mostly in 20 gauge...but wouldn't kick a nice 12 or 16 gauge away.

I have one of these, although I've never shot it. Belonged to my grandfather and dates from approx. 1914 or 1915 (the model of 1908 was made in 4 variations, from 1909 to 1942).
Takes 2.5" shell.
HAVE IT CHECKED BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH FIRST...If it passes that inspection, then the most powerful round I'd put in that gun would be an "upland load", which is a low base, standard powder charge round throwing standard weight shot charge (in your case, 1 oz.).

I agree! Most all ive seen of this vintage have their finish worn to a grey patina. An impressive amount of case hardening has survived the past century+. Keep that baby oiled and dry.
