I have been struggling getting back in the gym for which I have been paying a monthly membership and not using it at all.

I am also interested in purchasing a 7mm Rem Mag rifle which is not a budget priority right now.

My solution to do both is to pay myself for time spent doing cardio at the gym. The rate I will be paying myself is about equal to what I make at my job. That is roughly 40 cents a minute. The rifles I have been looking at are in the $500 range. That equates to about 1250 minutes of cardio at the gym.

The main goal is to create a habit of going to the gym. Since habits take time, I will limit the time I pay myself to a maximum of 30 min per visit. That would be roughly 42 gym visits to earn $500, if I did 30mins each visit. I likely won't do the max minutes each visit so more than 42 visits will be required.

This exercise will be on top of my 6 minutes a day (and increasing 1 minute a day each month) commitment. Any strength training, if any, I do at gym will not count towards the pay myself plan.

The rifles I am looking at are budget rifles including, Howa 1500, Savage 110, Mossberg Patriot, Ruger American. Two must haves are thread muzzle and chambered in 7mm Rem Mag.

Have you considered just skipping to the end; buying the rifle and cancelling the gym membership?

Cancel Gym Membership, Buy Rifle (don't forget the bayonet), Workout with Rifle.
So many wins in my problem solving methods....

How about just make physical fitness an absolute nonnegotiable and commit to going to the gym unless it is actually impossible (e.g., injury, emergency)? No need to make elaborate plans; just good old fashioned self-discipline. Good health is its own reward. :)

And if rifle is only about five bills, save up on the side until you hit that amount, buy, and enjoy.

Seems straightforward to me. Best of wishes. :s0155:

If it was that easy for me, it would already be done.

I fear his fast-food budget might take a hit when he finds out he still has to put a scope, rings and base one it!

Self-discipline isn't easy for a lot of folks, myself included. Perhaps view it not as a chore, but rather the beginning of a new journey in life. To quote Marcus Aurelius "We should discipline ourselves in small things, and from these progress to things of greater value." :)

5min in feels like chore

Similar to what MTpockets suggested...

My father-in-laws Sako 7mm RemMag was a beast...

Cancel membership, buy your rifle, sling it over your shoulder, and take a walk in the woods... one mile out and one mile back.

Two birds... and much more enjoyable than the gym. Although, woodland creatures in yoga pants aren't quite as enjoyable as gym bunnies... 🤷‍♂️.

I love lifting. It's cardio I'm not a massive fan of. That being said, I see what you are doing. Basically a self reward for going to the gym which is cool. Whatever motivation is needed to get in there is a good game plan.

Same. Lifting is no biggie, even enjoyable. Cardio can be a chore though. When the weather doesn't suck, which is only part of the year here, it is easier to get in the cardio time. But the other months it can be a bit of a drudgery.

It just dawned on me that all the shopping cart pushing bums are really just trying to save up for something too. Too bad that something is crack though.

I think this is fairly universal. With the exception of some crazies out there... marathoners and such...

I ran cross-country in junior high and it was ok. Now I only run if being chased, and even then, that better be a pretty big bear...

In any case, @arakboss, odds are you'll never enjoy trying to stay fit/healthy and that lack of enjoyment is only exacerbated by the means in which you're trying to do it. In this case the gym. More than one way to skin a cat... find a way to get the exercise your after while doing something else you enjoy... hike in the woods, walk around a lake, whatever...

Yeah, back in my hockey days I hated lifting. Cardio was much more enjoyable. It had nothing to do with the fact my weight coach was a 50-ish year old roided-out man and my skating coach was a 20-something hot redhead.

Have you considered flash mob looting before all the stores pack up and leave? You could get your cardio in this way and save the profits from what your fence gives you to buy the rifle. No chance of getting caught in PDX and even if it happened you would not be prosecuted, especially if wear your BLM t-shirt.

Gym memberships are a scam. You can get a full workout from home.

Go buy the rifle now and get that over with.

I've always enjoyed lifting. Cardio is hit and miss... depends on the method.

I played roller hockey (no laughing ice boy) for a spell in high school. I absolutely loved it and damn was it a workout.

I got my start in roller leagues. Didn't move over to ice until I was ~15 and still played plenty of roller in the offseasons to help keep my conditioning up.
