I once called my local police dept and told them i was looking at buying a pistol online but before i did i wanted to be sure it wasnt on a list somewhere. They checked the serial number for me and gave it a clean bill o health.
Just out of curiosity, where is that provision stated in the law? Can you cite it specifically?
I don't see how it would be a legal violation - once the gun is officially transferred to the FFL (part of the process), it is, at that moment, their gun, which they then transfer to the buyer once the BGC clears. If the buyer doesn't pass, it remains the possession of the FFL, on their books, until they transfer it again - which they could do back to the seller or, in the case of Tigard Pawn, offer to sell it for the buyer who failed the check. Either way, it's all legally on their books, so I don't see where you're getting that it would be illegal.
Now, if they took possession of your gun and didn't put it on their books, that could be a problem, but I think most FFL's are smart enough to know that.

Great store. I was just in there yesterday to look at revolvers. He (Adam) didn't have anything I was looking for but browsed retailers for me and we shot the bubblegum for a bit. While I was there he got a bunch of Gen 5 glock 19s in and let me check them out. Best generation of Glocks yet. I'll send some business his way down the road. Great owner, store, prices, knowledge, and selection. Apparently he has a great deal on transfers too.

I'm in Oregon City. I haven't bought/sold a gun since the new law. Northwest Armory is my go to gun shop, but they're like $50 including BGC. Any places (names) that are cheaper in the area?

Gun transfer fees are a HUUUUUGE opportunity to bring in customers for the small business person such as small pawn shops. I am a business man and I can't even begin to list the amount of money I have spent on advertising that has not even brought in one single customer.
If I were a small FFL and wanted to get instant business, I would do ether of the following 2 things.
1, I would simply start offering free transfers and I would advertise this.
2. I would do it for a small fee such as 25.00 and then say, this includes a 25.00 gift certificate with ever gun transfer, then I would advertise this.
For every transfer I'd get the new gun customer to be placed on my email list so I could send them instant email alerts when a new gun came in. Constant contact is a email list management company and they will handle everything for you and they are cheap for lower tear service, as in, when you don't have 50k people on your email list.
This way, for pawn shops, you can keep in contact when man stuff comes in such as tools and guns.
Heck for the low/no cost transfer, I would require you to sign on to my email list. All you need is a computer in your store with an internet connection facing the customer then you simply have him/her sign up right there, or you can have them do it via a mobile phone interface you have setup. Then send them a thank you or welcome email with the code for the free transfer so you know for sure they signed up and are getting your emails.
I been in businesses since 2003 and I can tell you, customer acquisition cost are huge these days and then keeping them coming back, that is the key.

I've paid as much as $30 and as little as $15.

Steve's a great guy - I use him any chance I get. And if you happen to have multiple transfers on the same visit, he still only charges $20 total - I don't know any other FFL that makes such a deal.

$35 face to face transfer including the $10 BGC seems to be the norm. $45 if it's shipped to you from out of state from a FFL that includes the BGC, that's the best I've seen in Josephine County, so far.

Why would they? - they stood to benefit from the law considering how many have stated they will only buy new because of it. The law is certainly not a detractor for an FFL/gunshop.

+1. Fisherman's was awful. Had to fill out multiple forms, took forever and was expensive. Plus the guys who work there....WOW!
