Google Says It Continues to Allow Apps to Scan Data From Gmail Accounts

This may be paid content from the WSJ. A snippet:

WASHINGTON—Google Inc. told lawmakers it continues to allow other companies to scan and share data from Gmail accounts, responding to questions raised on Capitol Hill about privacy and potential misuse of the information contained in users' emails.

In a letter to senators, a top Google official said the company allows app developers to scan Gmail accounts, even though Google itself stopped the practice for the purpose of ad targeting last year. The company also disclosed that app developers generally are free to share the data with others, as long as Google determines that their privacy policies adequately disclose potential uses.

"Developers may share data with third parties so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data," Susan Molinari, the company's vice president for public policy and government affairs for the Americas, wrote in the letter. She added that the company, a unit of Alphabet Inc., makes sure the relevant privacy policy is "easily accessible to users to review before deciding whether to grant access."

This is misleading as a "Gmail Account" login is part of their single sign on service (i.e. is also your account for your YouTube, Google Docs, etc.). Which includes your contacts and a LOT of other information. The question is whether they let you know WHICH information and you agree to their terms of service. You gotta read the little print. If they take anything more, that's a great way to make some money in a law suit.

Speaking of Google's abuse of it's power.........

Google defends its search engine against charges it favors Clinton

Then.....
Among our key findings were that top search results were almost 40% more likely to contain pages with a "Left" or "Far Left" slant than they were pages from the right. Moreover, 16% of political keywords contained no right-leaning pages at all within the first page of results.

Our analysis of the algorithmic metrics underpinning those rankings suggests that factors within the Google algorithm itself may make it easier for sites with a left-leaning or centrist viewpoint to rank higher in Google search results compared to sites with a politically conservative viewpoint.

PS....was just watching CNBC and the reporter was making comments about this latest Google attempt to control America's thinking.....

That's according to internal company emails obtained by the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper reported that employees in January 2017 wanted to counter what they saw as "islamophobic, algorithmically biased results from search terms 'Islam', 'Muslim', 'Iran', etc." and "prejudiced, algorithmically biased search results from search terms `Mexico', `Hispanic', `Latino', etc."

Google, provides free products................. Nothing is free.
I got an invitation at their inception of Gmail thru my business. Had it all these years.
Back then there was no, blog, youtube or anything else. Just Google search and email.
Problem is so many are locked in the use of that email, and if you are like me, they must have allot on me.
I am not too worried, but have thought about getting rid of my Gmail, but never found any replacements that were even close.
