So, we have a black bear visit quite often this summer, sometimes very close to the house; as in touching the porch at least once. His main antics, however, has been getting into the garbage cans that are farther away from the dwelling, close to one of the outbuildings. A couple of which he lunched. I believe I've resolved that by installing those heavy duty straps on the cans. If that doesn't do it, I'm going to invest in those big, sturdy metal locking setups that fully enclose the cans.

The times he's showed up during the day, I just got kiddos in the house and an appropriate firearm ready, if needed. I've seen / heard / smelled him at other times in the forest surrounding our house. I don't want to dispatch him unless required and within the guidelines Oregon sets forth.

Whilst farting around the web, I came across non-lethal noise makes that can be launched from a 12-gauge. Appears to be like the bird bombs, but for bruins. Anyone ever use these? Thanks.

I personally wouldnt waste my money. I would just kill it and be done.

I know ive posted this pic before. This is why I dont bear hunt or eat bears. They are nasty.....these worms where not in the stomach, they where in the chest cavity 1000000535.jpg 1000000536.jpg

The biggest one, the leader, wrapped himself around my wrist while I was gutting it. Just kill the bear and roll it over the bank. They are right there with coyotes in my opinion

Extra protein.

Never used them.

Bears are extremely food motivated & remember. So if the bear had success once, it will keep returning. Probably until it finds an easier/more routinely reliable source...

Can you rig up a bear spray that you could trigger with a string?
I had one experience with cracker shells up in Alaska. We cleared out the Hill Bar in Craig and then had one go off between the trailer houses just as the neighbor opened the door. When the shell went off 5 feet in front of his face he screamed and tipped over backwards into his house. He was not amused... I laughed my bubblegum off!

That scores near the top of my, "YUCK" scale. Right alongside wild boar.

For those who have never hunted / cleaned bear....
They do look a lot like humans when skinned....Just saying , so there are no ....
WTF surprises ifin' you do get a bear.

As for smell....Black bear can be very musky smelling...richer in scent than a skunk at times.

As for the OP...
No I have never used those cartridges.

I do like the idea of removing the food source / making it difficult for the bear to get at the garbage cans.
Always a good idea...and glad that it was done here.

Human urine can dissuade bears...maybe take a wiz or three by the cans / problem areas.... :D

I had a bear set that kept getting robbed by coyotes so I figured id piss all over everything every check. It definitely kept the coyotes from stealing my bait but the bear didn't hesitate and had him caught soon after the coyotes stopped ruining my set. Only tried piss that one time
