When you get these tests back on ancestry you get a bunch of docs thrown at you you didn't know existed. My parents got married in 1964. I found out that my parents got divorced in 1970 when I was 4 years old. Huh? I lived with them for all of the 70's and they were married. NOPE! They were not married. Then in 1979 they got divorced again. I knew about that . Then they got remarried again 6 months later. So, married, divorced, divorced, married. WTF? Yeah. They got divorced and my dad had a change of heart and demanded my mother move back in with him. She did and they played it off like they were married throughout the 70's in another state . At the end of the 70's they got divorced again even though they werent actually married because they had to split up property and do parenting plans etc. Then they got remarried a few months later. I cannot make this bubblegum up.

Bo, you sound like you come from the Low Country.

I know if we met in person, my normal drawl would come back.

My kids know when I talk with my brothers, because I've got that twang in my voice.

I grew up in Goose Creek in the 70s-80s... I still have friends that went through the same thing.

Boy you'd think so huh. Nope, mom is from Northern California. Dad from L.A. . Dad was a certified genius nuclear engineer and mom a Stanford grad piping design engineer. Both just a little high strung. The 70s were a bad time.

When this thing got going good I wondered about that. How many people would find out the person they thought was "Dad" was really not. That many times even the Mother may not have known for sure that the kid was not "fathered" by the one she told everyone it was. Not to mention the people who find out they have half siblings they had no idea they were related too.
Back when I began teaching genetics, including human genetics, I had to learn to deal with students coming along to ask how come they were thus and so blood type or whatever when their parents were such that they supposed inheritance patterns didn't make sense. One part of the story was an average human illegitimacy rate of about 6%. That is, about 6% of children weren't sired by their supposed fathers. Even a couple decades back, about 50% of first children were conceived out of wedlock, though married by the time the woman started to show. This pattern had been true over all races and classes since the European settlement of America. If a woman became pregnant and the presumed father was a suitable husband, traditionally a "shotgun marriage" might be arranged. But what if woman was dating two guys and got pregnant by one who was less desirable as a mate? Might she not also hook up with a more desirable partner, then blame and require marriage from him? I wonder what proportion of those pre-marriage conceptions have the wrong father as father. Might be considerably more than 6%.

Many kids are adopted and don't know that. Sometimes the adoption is a matter of record, but often is not. An unmarried female where the father is not considered suitable husband may go off visiting relatives for a few months and gives the child up for adoption. Then she comes back to her community and uses a little chicken blood on the sheets on her marriage night.

Another factor is among families one of a pair of twins may be given informally to a relative. A young struggling couple with a mother not especially strong might give up one of the twins to better established relatives who are happy to have an extra kid who is at least a niece or nephew of one parent instead of a daughter or son. Even if the family is relatively open about the situation they may consider it none of the government's business, and the adoptive parents on all documents are listed as the natural parents. Where there are "cousins" who look identical it may be because they really are identical twins. Where they are fraturnal twins the situation is much less obvious. Raising twins is extraordinarily difficult for a new mother, as an infant needs to be suckled or cleaned up every couple of hours, and the twins usually don't sleep at the same time, reducing the situation from one of little sleep for the mother to no sleep for the mother. Where the family has been somewhat secretive, this means that neither of your parents may be your real parents, though one of them is at least a relative, and both infants are genuinely wanted.

Finally, new mutations can happen. They are rare, but where the mutation is severe enough to cause medical issues they show up because of the medical issues.

Its said that about 75% of human fertilizations/zygotes spontaneously abort, usually so early the mother never knows she was pregnant. Most mutations are either invisible or detrimental instead of advantageous. In addition, humans are highly inbred. We lost most of our genetic diversity when a great genetic bottleneck happened about 70,000 years ago. So many fertilized human zygotes are lethal or detrimental because two recessive genes that are detrimental have come together. Where the fetus carries a lethal or severely detrimental mutation or genetic combination, in most cases the fetus spontaneously aborts, usually before the fourth month. This is why many women or couples are reluctant to announce a pregnancy until after the third month, especially where there has been a history of miscarriages . By the time a fetus makes it into the third trimester, it is usually strong and healthy enough to make it the rest of the way and arrive as a healthy infant.

Gal I knew long ago had given up a baby when she was young. Family paid all medical to have the kid. Kid grows up never knowing until she was in her 30's. Parents are getting divorced and father in anger blurts out to his girl that she was adopted. Nice guy. After that gals head quit spinning over that one she searches for and finds her birth mother and makes contact. The resemblance to the birth mother and her were easy to see. The birth Mother and the gal got along quite well as years went on. Not sure if she ever did want any more to do with the guy who raised her then lashed out at her due to anger with his ex wife.

I will say because of my recent heavily English heritage on my dads side and not so much on the kinder friendlier side , more on the imperialist side there was a let's say, heavy level of disrespect for the Irish. Like really heavy. Now that I've discovered through DNA and tracing I'm actually pretty heavily Irish on my moms side I can throw that all away and slog down a few pints on st Pattie's day. If I wasn't on a strict diet that is

Your DNA is the only thing you have left after being born that is yours. Your unique personal private genetic property. Your born with a constitutional right against invasion of privacy, specially of your own Body, and It takes a court order to remove this property and personal privacy away from you .
The insanity of millions of Americans just giving their DNA away for harvest and industrial storage. All for 20 minutes of amusements to a third party's artistic interpretation of their ancestral linage. I can not even articulate the level of stupidity of doing this, because the last frontier on earth is 'your' DNA.

Meh. Who cares. Youre not special

If your DNA is on file and your parent, child, sibling, or even cousin commits a crime and leaves DNA, he/she may be identified because of your DNA on record, even though he/she does not have DNA on record. I don't necessarily consider that a problem, but if I was a criminal sloppily leaving my DNA at crime scenes I might.

More problematic is if insurance companies get hold of your genetic info. They could then refuse to insure you against any known genetic diseases you have because they are preexisting conditions. Lets say you carry the gene for Parkinson's disease. They could refuse you any life or health insurance. Furthermore, since your siblings and children have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene, insurance companies might deny coverage to your siblings and children too. There are issues with respect to how secure your DNA data is with these companies.

And would you really want to know that you carried were going to get and die of Parkinson's disease? I think I might prefer not to know. And if you have the gene, would you tell your siblings or children of your expected fate so that all their interactions with you will be tinged with pity even long before the disease starts to show. And should they get tested so they can learn whether they are going to develop it too?

You have no idea how this information may be used some day.
For what? I kind of look at it like when I have to show a police officer something on my phone and people start barking at me about never hand your unlocked phone to the police because they can do what? Look at my lousy eastern European porn ? Who cares? Theres nothing there. Mmmmm, Slavic chicks. Oh yeah, insurance companies can turn me down for whatever. Does that even happen? Ive never heard of it actually happening. I sign up at work and I get whatever crappy insurance they have . Once one member of your family gets tested thats it. Your'e in the database whether you know it or not. Wer'e not that different.

You can take that cavalier attitude if you want to. That's up to you. But the fact is you have given the most private information about you, your family, and your relations to people you don't even know to use in any way they want. To sell to whom ever they want. Who knows how it will be used in the future? What kind of technology may be developed to make use of it? But, by all means, have your fun.

On yeah, enjoy your E. European porn, too.

What do you honestly think they can or will do with that information? The most is usually sell it to scientists performing research and it is sold anonymously. We have known the general human genome for decades and have not seen any detrimental things come from that information.

E European porn is always good.

Hell yeah it is

One cannot foresee the unforeseen. That's the whole point.

They still retain your DNA linked to your personal identifying information, with absolute rights to do with it as they please. That would be my concern. Not what they "usually" do now, or what hasn't been a problem in the past.

E European porn is always good.
I prefer women.
