The dog just made its way back to camp (and food, maybe?). People at the camp saw the dog and didn't see Branden or his truck and the other three dogs, so it dawned on them that maybe something was amiss. Good on them for following that line of reasoning instead of just laughing that ol' Branden will really be pissed at that dog for running off on him.

Actually, I was raised with dogs. Hunting dogs. They were really smart and good at what they did, but their behavior never exceeded a doggy level of reasoning. Guaranteed they could never have saved Timmy even if a director read the script to them.
