if an intruder hears you racking, they gonna RUN!
Speaking only for myself here...
For where I live...and How I live....
Keeping a shotgun loaded...but with an empty chamber works ...for me.
It may not for someone else.

However...
Thinking that the sound of a round being chambered is always going to scare off a threat is foolish.
It might do that...or it could give away your position...or you could jam up your shotgun in the stress of the moment....or.....

And while we can what if ...what about this till the cows come home and still not have an answer for all.....

I would suggest that you do what works for you....and your situation....and not rely on so called "common wisdom"
Or what works for others.

This is one that makes me roll my eyes. Just like ol Creepy Joe just telling people to shoot one off into the air...
Yep....:D

I know what I would probably do if I heard the sound of a round being chambered....or a shot fired in the air....
However...
it don't matter what I would do.
What matters is how the threat reacts to that...and since there ain't no predicting of that....
It useless to be relying on those actions to be worthwhile
Andy

I personally prefer whispering from the dark.

Except when they don't. Relying on this scare tactic instead ot traing has resulted in very poor outcomes for some defenders
Agreed! Nobody actually WANTS to shoot... the fear is real, and so are the consequences. I just pray more intruders run when they hear a weapon racked; and I pray we all train to keep our families safe.

I've owned two 20ga guns that just sucked on recoil… sharp impulse and bad geometry… One was a Lefever SxS and the other was a Mossy pump I bought for my daughter. Both gone and good riddance. I would steer clear.

I have heard only good things about the Mossberg 500s. I know I like my Maverick 88. Not only is it affordable, but it shoots great. I haven't had any problems with it. And that's on the cheaper end of Mossberg shotguns, not to mention that a lot of the accessories you can put on a 500 will work on it as well. I'm sure that shotgun will treat you just fine.

Late to the party, but will throw in my $0.05 (price increase due to inflation :D ). Currently own a few 500s and a 590. Hundreds of rounds fired through each, zero problems. Prefer them over the 870, though it is also a fine shotgun.

100% agreed with the above - get the stock fitted to your needs, and it'll make all the difference in the world.

There is no substitute for experience running the gun, so invest in instructor-led courses and trigger time over everything else (aside from stock fitting). Not kidding, it is by far the most valuable use of your firearm-related time and budget.

Mossberg shotguns have always been their "Bread & Butter" line. There was a time when they weren't making rifles, but they never stopped shotgun production. Reliable working shotguns that have always been affordable. The rifles have also been the same. Reliable, accurate, and they won't bust a budget.

Makes me think of the homeowner that racked his shotgun (probably thinking the same thing) and instead was greeted with a hail of 7.62x39 through his door from the badguy's AK on the other side.
I think you overestimate the capabilities of the tweekers out there. To rack or not to rack is an argument that will never end but making bigger and bigger boogeymen to support your opinion on one side or the other is amusing. Seriously... Who burglarizes a home with an AK?
Consider this
A quality burglar will either be in and out without your knowing it, or more likely will just wait till you aren't home.
In a full on home invasion with AK's etc. You probably won't have time to grab the shotgun, let alone rack it loud enough to scare the trolls away. If you're able to see the raid coming then you'd better grab a rifle instead of that shotgun. And be calling 911 while herding your family to whatever safe space you might have
The dipbubblegum tweeker breaking into your home with his sharpened screwdriver will either panic and go out the window like the 3 stooges when he hears the rack or will be too high to notice the sound, let alone understand what it means, in which case your fully charged shotgun will be ready for the tweeker's next bad life choice.
