Reminds me of the 'number' stations that could be heard on AM radio - and probably still can if one has a non - digital, vernier tuned AM broadcast radio.

I remember listening to some of them many years ago when I lived in an area with better AM reception.

Some of them were pretty strange and most made no sense - to the average person that is, but they no doubt make sense to whoever IS using them - and for whatever reasons.....

I find this interesting; in a SHTF emergency, a person might be able to use this for western hemisphere long or short distance comms - i.e., pretty much any distance, as long as you have a view of the satellite.

Of course it would be illegal and the maybe the military would shut it down? But right now, per the vid, it seems that "pirates" in S. America are using it. If you used it for digital comms, and kept the comms short, it might be worth dealing with it.

Super cool im going to have to try this out
Note that the vid only talks about the RX portion of the satellite comms.

I have dug into it enough to know what would be involved to also do TX. He does talk about "pirates" in Brazil doing both RX & TX, so I assume they have the equipment to do so - just have no idea what that would consist of. Certainly it would not be legal here.

One might also assume that it could be blocked by the owner of the satellite (I assume it is the US military) - although one might also wonder why they have not done so already (maybe they have abandoned the satellite for something more up to date (e.g., StarShield which is LEO and therefore would be available anywhere on the earth, all the time).

Problem is with monitoring these transmissions is UNLESS you understand the language they mean nothing!

I kinda skimmed the vid and finally found a part where he was describing frequencies and he mentioned a frequency doubler device that would allow a particular radio to TX in the 250 - 260 Mhz range of the Sat frequencies.

Interesting stuff no doubt but a lot of dedication and work to mess with it!

I keep my Ham stuff pretty simple and basic!

Yeah - not really interested in what others are saying if they are not in a country that directly impacts my situation.

Yup - just saying it is an option that is maybe useful for some people. E.G., repeaters are down, and you need to comm with someone who is not line of sight.
