I do consulting and training in the traffic safety industry and highly recommend cameras in fleets with professional (commercial) drivers. For the general public, there is an important consideration; how good of a driver are you? If you are an above-average driver, cameras are great. Commercial drivers are. With the rest of the public, half are better than average, half are not. There is a study that shows that 93% of drivers think they are better than average, so 50% are correct, 43% are clueless, and 7% are honest. These last two groups do not benefit from having a camera in their cars in most cases.

Before everyone starts telling stories about bad truck drivers (there are plenty and I have no shortage myself), remember, we tend to remember bad experiences over good ones. Statistically, if a truck driver and a non-commercial car driver crash, 81% of the time it will be the car driver's fault.

In all things, there's that nasty Belle curve. Average is just that, average, and the majority fall into that category. Think of the most average driver, and how bad/clueless that they are. Take fear in knowing that the majority are within a standard deviation of that imbecile.

Just think about how dumb the average person is, then realize half of them are dumber than that!

I installed a front and back camera on my 2008 Subaru Impreza. Wife got hit by semi-truck and didn't stop. I was planning on putting a dash cameras on her buy the insurance totaled her car.

I have often warned people over the years who see mine and ask about getting one for their cars. Remember if you do screw up and video can also show clearly you were at fault. A lot like when Cops first started going with body cams. I said it will be great for the good and help weed out the bad. With a car dash cam I guess if someone does something "dumb" and knows full well they did they could just yank the card out and destroy it. I have NO doubt many are stupid enough to video themselves doing something really stupid though and then letting others see it. Look at the amazing crap people willingly post to social media of them doing this.

Enough with your facts and statistics! It's about my feelings! I feel like I'm a good driver!

I got my first dash cam back in 2017 after a close call during my daily commute into P town. Just a cheap Thinkware f50. And since have upgraded to VIOFO A129's in my vehicles. I have even brought the mentality over to my motorcycles and now ride 100% of the time with a gopro. I catch all kinds of crap on camera.

But I also want to add it also keeps me honest. There are times, specially on my bike, where I have a close encounter with a car. And in the moment I make a judgement that x y and z happened, I say some choice words and move on with my day. Get home and watch that part of my ride and realize, I could of adjusted my lane position or where I was at in someones blind spot or whatever.

Definitely +1 to everyone get a dash cam.

Someone around here stabbed my sidewall a few days ago, what kind of camera can watch around all sides of my truck?
How about a General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper Drone? Not only will this identify the target, I mean suspect, but it can also effectively remove them from the gene pool. Okay, perhaps a bit extreme of a solution.

Remember, the subjects of all of the dash cam videos that we waste our time watching? They should not have dash cams.

Can I get it in an 80% version, without serial numbers?

I've had one in one of my rigs for a few years now. So far I've got footage of a wreck that I was in where I killed a Honda and a clip of someone in my lane who almost hit me head on. They're a good thing to have and mine has paid for itself.

Seen plenty of good truck drivers, this one takes top prize for worst so far...

His company was not thrilled with the video footage I submitted to them.

The Birdie out the window, protected speech, but not very professional especially when he was the aggressor...

The company found the driver quickly enough and they claimed the driver was quite surprised he got caught...

Did you ask the company to pay for a replacement light bar? Most employees that cost their companies money with their foolish tempers don't tend to stick around for long.

Only thing to fix it was loosen the tilt bolts and point it back down as it was knocked upward...

The best investment you could ever make to keep not only yourself in check, but also as proof of someone elses wrong-doing!

My suggestions from experience...get yourself a system that records front, rear and inside the cab, and that sends videos also to a cloud or your email or phone and something that is password protected preferably. I say from experience because a shady prosecutor and deputies erased all my footage in a self-defense ordeal I got into years ago. However if you just want a basic dash cam with microSD card memory only, be sure to remove the microSD card and put it in a safer place to be found by someone you trust later so it can't be tampered with.

Also note a good habit is to verbally TALK to the dash cam. Meaning say out loud descriptions of persons, vehicles and vehicle license plates. Most cameras can NOT make out a license plate in video, but the audio is usually more clear.

Did you know that body cameras also make good dash cams? I'm selling some! Go check out my listing.

OBLIGED!
