Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I just saw one of these "Altor" pistols in the case at Bimart, had to see if anyone had already made a thread on them. Sure enough...

Anyhow, there it was in the case, with a price of $99. Next to it was a SCCY 9mm for $179. I have to ask myself, why in the world would anyone ever buy *this*, when they could have *that* for just another $80?

It was much like the .22 revolvers on the shelf just below them: a Rough Rider for $139, and a Wrangler for $179. The quality difference between the two is tremendous, so why would anyone ever buy the one, when they could have the other for just $40 more?

Easy, total lack of knowledge about why one is better then the other.

Low price is a powerful motivator. Look at all the cheap crap on the market today and look at the people who buy it.

A gun that actually shoots for $99 will attract a lot of people who would probably be better off wielding a baseball bat for self defense.

I probably shouldn't talk though, I buy stuff at harbor freight... but their ratchets & sockets are better then craftsman ratchets now so...

Ya I saw one too at Bi-Mart this past week. I thought it was torch or something they set in as a joke then notice it had a caliber and said "single shot". One and done. no idea what its ment for. Looks like you thread it apart too.:rolleyes:

It's kind of a "tribute" gun to the WWII Liberator guns that were chambered in .45 and dropped all over Western Europe so that the French resistance would have something to use against the Nazis that were occupying their country. It too was a single shot and accurate up to about five feet.

Just read a write up on this Altor in Guns Magazine. It is also available in 9mm.
The barrel twists 1/4 turn and comes off to reveal what looks like a short two lug, CRF bolt. Insert cartridge in bolt face, install barrel, pull trigger until the wedge/ramp built into the frame levers your finger off of the trigger spur, allowing the trigger and striker to fly forward and ignite the primer. One and done. Very much like a Liberator in function, if not form.

Not much worse is this one...

If you're contemplating suicide, why pay more for a second shot. Whatever is cheapest.

I would nominate the cobra variants as one of the worst. Also bryco 380. that was one of the worst guns I ever had. Have also heard lots of bad things about the diamondback .380. RSRKKFA-40210_1__20853.1584659008.jpg

IDK I am tempted to get it, thread it, and suppress it. even in 9mm with such a short barrel it will be subsonic and no action noise and about $2000 cheaper than the B&T VP9

That's true. My brother-in-law recently told me that he'd bought a Rough Rider. I asked him if he'd seen the Ruger Wrangler, and he said "Yeah but they cost more, and I couldn't see any difference".

Honestly it will probably work fine for him, for as much as he shoots. Most Rough Rider revolvers are surprisingly functional, for pot-metal junk thrown together by unskilled workers. The Ruger Wrangler, on the other hand, is an actual entry-level firearm, a real gun put together by a real gun company.

The issue I see with the Altor isn't one of quality. It feels solid, and is made of solid materials. The problem is one of functionality. What the heck is it good for? I see such limited usefulness for such a gun, can't imagine it will be around long.

Actually the first thing I thought when seeing it was "gadget gun". I could see someone threading it for a thin suppressor and making it into a really cool cane gun, or umbrella gun.

EDIT: ronin223 beat me to it, as I was typing! :)

Completely disagree. I've had several rough riders and still have two. They are not anywhere close to junk. They feel and shoot great, are very reliable, and have 4 click action like a colt SAA.
