Cooling Barrel With All Thread Rod.

I have an idea for cooling the barrel in between strings. For a 30 cal barrel, I would use a 1/4 diameter piece of powder coated all thread rod. The powder coat would minimize risk of damage to the rifling. In between strings I would remove the bolt and run the all thread rod through the receiver and barrel until it breached the muzzle by a few inches. The rod would soak up the heat from the barrel. It might release the heat through the ends of the rod or the rod could be changed out after it got hot.

Has anybody here tried something like this?

Powder coating will insulate the all thread, and steel isn't conductive enough to begin with. Aluminum all thread or straight rod might help, but I'd expect the effect to be minimal.

Aluminum rod seems cheap.

I've seen guys use aquarium blowers and raft inflators to run air thru the bore and drape a wet towel over the barrel.

The transfer of heat would only be marginally faster. It is all about surface area contact and movement off the medium. Moving air is good but water is the king.

Air is a very poor thermal conductor. This chart list ratings of thermal conductivity for various materials/mediums.

Go to a metal recycle place. I bet some thicker ground wire /rod would work or smaller pipe. I buy quite a bit of copper from cherry city to make keychains & windchimes

I will try the aluminum rod first. If it works, I will try to track down a copper rod.

Yep that is why a breeze doesn't help cool you down and we blow air across coils to transfer heat.

I guarantee you blowing air through barrel will cool barrel down much faster than a static rod.

Didn't you have some half baked notion of using an electric fan for the same reason?

I do use a wet towel on the exterior but I was looking for something to draw heat from the bore.

If the Aluminum rod gets warm where is the heat coming from?

If the rod gets warm, won't you need to exchange it for one that isn't already heated up. Otherwise, the heat sink is still in the barrel.

Edit. I could use a rod twice the length needed and push & pull the hot end out in intervals.
