I know this is more for hunting and fishing knives but I'm hoping we can get some help finding a dishwasher safe knife set.

We have a set that has been replaced multiple times and no matter what we purchase always, seems to rust quickly. I have gone online to find "dishwasher safe" knife sets and then read the reviews that say, "hand wash only." Yes, they will be put into the dishwasher and we would like them to last more than a couple of years. Any ideas?

Im not sure about the basic steak knives and whatnot but in all my years working in a kitchen i have never have any of my utility knives rust, and thats with beating them up really good. You can prob find sets cheaper online but the individual chef/utility knives def can be found cheaper online. Just my opinion.

whats your budget? do you have a sharpener ?
I'm willing (and I think my @CountryGent is too) to spend more, if it means they don't have to keep being replaced. We have been in this house ten years and are on our third set. We are looking for quality.

The only sharpener we have currently, is the one that came with the set.

Dishwasher and knife do not belong together.
That is what I find so strange. We have steak knifes that were a Texaco giveaway from probably 40 years ago, that is just now showing its age. They are also put in the dishwasher, but no rust. Ones we bought a few years ago, every knife has rust.

Rust isn't the issue.

Dishwasher detergent is an abrasive. You're sandblasting the edges of those knives every time you 'wash' them.

Wipe clean, dry, put in butcher block. Done and done.

Go to Walmart and buy SKYLINE knives.
They're cheap, long lasting, keep an edge, dishwasher durable
I'm currently using 2 paring, 1 chef's, and a ham slicer that were bought 30 years ago. I don't dishwasher torture them often as I generally just hand wash/wipe immediately after use.
I have a Henkels chef/chopping, boneing, and slicer that I've had for forty years. The Henkels are pricey and very dishwasher safe, but to be honest I preffer the thinner, hollow -ground Skyline blades.

As an aside… I have never heard of a stainless kitchen knife rusting in a dishwasher. You may be getting an electrolytic reaction from your knives touching dissimilar metals in the dishwasher … maybe try washing them in the top rack with the glasses and not in the cutlery basket?

Why not wipe the knife blades with a paper towel with cooking oil on it when you take them out of the dish washer? CountryGent oils the guns after cleaning so same same.

Thank you, we will see if putting them on top makes a difference.

I bought a set of Cutco when I was doing well to help someone out.

Makes knife shopping boring when I have every style I will most likely need.

Having said that:

Good knives $$$= hand wash and dry only

Cheaper knives $ = dishwash them and replace as needed

I've never heard of an in between.

Mine are going on 25+ years and it is free warranty and sharpening for life - I've used both and never had a problem but if you look into them be ready to fork out a very nice rifles worth of dough (and hand wash them!)

Buy corrosion resistant steels; M390, 420HC, 14c28n, VG10, S35VN, N690,... I think Spyderco and Cold Steel offer kitchen sets with the storage blocks. J.A. Henckels makes quality dishwasher safe kitchen knives.
