Considering a Thompson 1927 45acp.

Hello, New guy here. Originally from Boise, but left there a long time ago. I do like to collect the older collectible firearms, however there are modern firearms I like as well. I've been considering purchasing an Auto Ordnance Thompson. I've pretty much zeroed in on the full metal models, not the light weight aluminum type. I really like the case hardened option with drum and stick mags. Does anyone here own one? And How do you like them? Was there any function issues. I did shoot a full auto a couple of summers ago, it's such an Iconic gun, but those real ones are out of my budget. Thank you everyone!

I know. They are about 13 lbs unloaded. I've got a few other heavy guns that I've been working out with.

First welcome. As for the gun I LOVED the idea from the day they hit. What always kept me from pulling the trigger on one was the REALLY poor results so many had with them. ALL mass manufacturers will let out a problem now and then. This gun seems to just let out way too many, especially for the price point they sell for.

My personal experience with a full auto Thompson was that it was more fun letting other people shoot it.
I had a WW2 100 rd drum and a couple of 50 rd drums, plus a bunch of stick mags.
The stick mags always worked well, but the drums were prone to jamming.
A single action Thompson doesn't have those issues. Most of my time spent was loading up the drums/mags.

Original Thompson? No question, go for it. To quote Ferris Bueller "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up".

The contemporary Kahr Arms / AO ... eh, I take pause. Yes, I was redonkulously tempted by their SBR version. Then I bought one of their M1 clones for wife for at home. Biggest pile of goat excrement I ever encountered in a semi-auto rifle. The damn thing would not run after multiple trips back to the factory, spring changes, magazines tried galore, every brand of ammo I could find ... just wouldn't work. Odds are we just got a lemon. But, caca, never again.

So, yah, maybe give it a spin. But I'm not going to place a bet on that roulette wheel again.

(Parenthetically, the Magnum Research line that is currently owned by Kahr: absolutely fantastic. Stunningly beautiful, massive, single-actions in an impressive array of magnum and rifle cartridges. Go figure.)

I have the exact same model as the one listed below, and you just HAVE to have the 'violin' case as well as the drum mag if you are going to own a Tommy!

Everybody thinks their cool until you have to carry one for a 4 hour shift .
With 2 extra stick mags .
They are a hoot to shoot though .
I still preferred the grease gun myself .

So, it's the mother in-law of sub-guns.... awkward, heavy, and loud when you pull its trigger.

On duty where? In the Argon Hills, or the Maginot Line waiting for the Germans to invade again?

There is a 16" barreled Auto Ordnance in the classifieds. My wife offered to buy one for me as an anniversary present, but I declined because of the long barrel. I asked for a Kimber Montana, instead.
At least I would have kept the Thompson and then chopped the barrel.

I have the semi auto SBR version. It is heavy but quite fun to shoot. The drum mag was a PITA so I only use stick mags.
