With the recent dropping of the penny I was reminded of the jug of coins I have been lugging around for the last 35 years stuffed in a closet. I was pretty good about pulling all the wheat pennies out before they went into the jug but I never really looked at the coins going into the jug that closely as I am not a coin collector.

With the rainy weather I decided that old jug needs to go away. We have another smaller jug in the cabinet we use for grabbing coins to buy eggs off neighbors and vending machines we might use. I sat down tonight and managed to sort through 2700 pennies so far. I just separated out the dimes, nickels, and quarters and did not sort them. I got pretty good at recognizing any penny from the 80's on back just by color. I decided to only set aside anything older than the 70's. So far most coins I set aside are 60's with a couple 50's and one 40's. Of the 69's I found four floating roof coins. Two are legit and two are not as crisp but still floaters. And I found one 1943 steelie that is not in the best shape with a blemish on the date side.
I found two Canadian pennies, one smashed Lincoln, and one dollar bill.

I figure I will sort through them, roll them, and either take them to the bank or trade them off at some stores that need them. Once the pennies are done I will roll all the other coins as well holding back a few for the smaller jug in case we need some coins. Looking at the jug I have about 2000 more to sort through. I'm just glad I never really tried to fill this jug and it was only about 1/4-1/3 full.

I really do not know what to look for in coins as far as extra value. I recently learned about the floating roof but really never cared that much about learning what else is out there. I know about silver dimes and quarters and saw a few different nickels in the bunch...I will have to look at those closer when I sort all those out. I do know I'm not going to examine every coin under a magnifier....my nerd does not run that deep.

Never even heard of a floating roof coin until now.
We have a wine carafe full of pennies. Maybe some day we'll sort through them. Or maybe not.

Last night I saw an ad online for an app while searching for what coins to look for. Then I found several more years of pennies to look for and looked at my pile of coins that I had already looked at knowing those dates were in that pile, somewhere....and that ended my curiosity as I was not about to go back over the stacks. Maybe on the next batch I will hold back a few more dates but that is as far as I'll dig.

Some of the things you need to look for are so tiny it makes it very hard for me to see them...even with a magnifying glass.

I made it through my entire jug. I found a total of three steelies, five floating roofs, and about a dollars worth of pennies earlier than the 1970's. Only one or two wheat pennies were still in there. About 35 bucks in pennies, 55 bucks in quarters, and I have not counted the dimes and nickels. Once all wrapped I will have about $200 I would assume. I might get $20 for the 9 pennies that are special if I'm lucky.

It is good to get that big jug out of my closet....and no, I still don't want to collet coins..pain in the butt to deal with.! I think I will split the money with the wife and convert mine to freedom seeds.

I have hoarded a lot of coins over many decades.
What I am finding often , with silver and gold coins, melt value far exceeds any scarcity-based value.
