My preference is for 9mm. The ballistics of the .40 aren't significant enough (to me) to justify the extra recoil, reduced capacity and particularly extra cost of the round. And as the round continues to decrease in popularity, it's only going to become more expensive.

And if you're thinking about a sub compact like the Shield, always rent one in the caliber you're considering and try it first. Many sub compacts can be downright unpleasant to shoot, even in 9mm.

I wouldn't consider the Shield a sub-compact, more like a single stack compact. Its actually handle more like a full size than many of the compacts out there due to the length of the butt.

I see you went with the Shield, that was on my list when I was looking. I went with the PPS gen 2 after handling many single stacks. The only problem I have had is one of the dots fell out of the rear sight, just gave my an excuse to upgrade to night sights.

I lost the dot out of one of mine too... seems to be common.
Fortunately, Walther sights are stupid-easy to replace/upgrade.

I'm not saying I approve of what happened. But with the amount of anti-gun lobbying taking place at the state and federal level it's impossible (for me) to think these major manufacturers don't have contingency plans in place that include playing politics. SA got caught. Mods don't ban me for the sacrilege
From what I understand, the firm that made the sweetheart deal benefitting SA did so without their knowledge or input. SA immediately cut ties with them after this all became public and denounced the whole thing.

Could have just been damage control backpedaling, or it may have been the truth. But there is no other corroborating evidence that SA, as a company, has ever been involved in other shady political hackery or corporate espionage. I don't recall S&W or Bill Ruger ever disavowing the chicanery that bore their respective names...

I'd say shield. it has plenty of support/aftermarket and a proven record. I recently got a Shield 2.0 40 that I put a TLR6 on and plan to use for the hotter days carry.

Haven't seen a Mossberg MC1 in the wild tbh but I hear they are gaining traction.
Sound advice here to follow. With a good track record and plenty of online info you can look up the Shield Line has a safe earned reputation. And it's what my wife carries so I'm biased a bit :)

Bersa BP9CC. Once you've tried the trigger, you'll be sild.

I see it's too late to save him (LOL), and I know the OP stated "Glocks are out" and has a desired $450 budget.... BUT, I have owned a G43 for years, and recently bought a G43X and a G48 frame for my G43 (making it basically a G43X) and with Shield Arms magazines it carries 15+1 rounds in almost danged near the same dimensions as a G43. We're talking basically the difference in width of the thickness of the mag-well walls, and and grip length difference of the mag-plate thickness... it also fits in G43 holsters.

G43X can be had for about $100 more than the OP budget... just sayin'. ;)

The OP bought a Shield. Any further suggestions will just make the suggester look illiterate. :s0140:

@Stomper he COULD have got a G43X for his budget of $450. Alas, he did not.

What about SCCY? 9mm or 380 for well under $300.
"100% American made by American people ".

Like the one the OP listed yesterday? :D
