Biometric neophyte needs Opines

Grandkids a coming, maybe several weeks. (8-12 Years old) Not used to locking things up being we normally live a fairly secluded retired life. Last time just kids came kept things just CC till I went to bed. Good kids, but older, less supervision now.
Looking in to a biometric finger print safe for evening home access without carrying or worrying while their here.
I read that finger print may not be reliable with best chance of happening from the better top end units. I've also read that kids have been said to have circumvented the biometric print recognition from poor program feature.?? Of coarse all the makers claim theirs is perfect!

My question, I guess, are you of the opine this will be a save open storage with middle schoolers around?

My Vaultek biometric safe has been reliable, fast easy access. Programming the biometric pad was easy.
They have some models without the biometric feature that are also very fast, touchpad combination entry... more affordable. All are reliable and fast access, they come with a cable to tether them to something, work great for travel too. Vaultek makes good stuff. You can order direct from them instead of Amazon

I'll second Vaultek, I got one with all the bells and whistles. It lets me know when it's opened, or even attempted to open it. It uses key, biometric, or remote. Rechargeable and tamper proof. It was almost $500 but buy once cry once, the thing just plain works.

You can lock the dial at zero with the key after going through the combo, so if you need to quickly open it by using the key and rotating it to the right til it stops.

I keep a Life Pod, 10 I think, in the car. I didn't get the biometric one, but the keypad is quick and easy to operate. And I have a backup key if I need it. I think I got it at Scheels for a little over $100. I'd definitely get a nicer one for at home, I just haven't needed one yet.

Vline is the one I have. Might be a little bigger then this one.

Mechanical button combo, turn the knob and your in. Solidly built and never runs out of batteries or needs a bypass key.

Mine fits a G17 plus a happy stick with no problem.

And it's fairly thick metal - for its size it is surprising heavy.

Thanks for the input. On the one hand I'm reluctant to spend the money for the few weeks I need most, but on the other, if I'm spending it, I'd hate to cut myself short and spend good money for naught when maybe just a little more would be a better conclusion.

Well the model you shared above is probably one of their most expensive versions.
Their Lifepod series of portable safes are much more affordabe, the touchpad version doesnt have biometrics but is still very fast entry and runs $170.
I find the Vaultek Lifepods very useful for other events like road trips. They all come with steel cables to tether the safe to something... kids arent going to get into one or walk off with it. Theives will have to do way more work than just smash and grab.

For $170 its a useful product for all kinds of situations.

That's good to know, I've never been worried much about theft since that's just about impossible to control for one determined.
Notwithstanding my desire for quick access, my concern is strictly safety, and basic legal obligations to prevent access for curious, or sticky finger opportunities that may be about to present them self.. I like the option for use in a vehicle.
My wife and I, in our old age, have become rather complacence regarding gun access. Since we have out lived most all our near familial ilk and friends, its rare anyone other than us enters our home, though twice in the last two years, there have been a considerable number of strangers here in the form of ambulance and fire paramedics. I'm guessing that aspect not likely to go away.

If you mean kids, i raised 2 kids with these Vaultek Lifepods and have no concerns kids can tamper with it and get in.
Nothings bombproof though, the Lifepod models are thick plastic. Vaultek also sells all metal portable safes but the trade off is they are heavier to lug around but the all metal option is there.

There is one flaw I will share. In vehicles on really hot summer days, if the lifepod has been stored inside the hot vehicle... it sometimes takes about 30 seconds of touching for the touchpad to be responsive.
Just my experience with them.

Often times less is more. Batteries die, electronics fail, and often at the worst possible time. I also don't believe that biometrics at the general price point of lock boxes is anywhere near the point of reliability that one would want. Hell the biometrics on my iPhone isn't even reliable and that costs a lot more money and they've had a lot more time to perfect it.

My preference for lock boxes is always a mechanical simplex lock. YMMV.

I've gone to Fort Knox pistol safes for my house and have never looked back. They're expensive but worth the money. They're also super fast to get into if you know the code.
