I have an early Armalite AR-10B w/ the early style bolt catch. It only works reliably with the early magazines (where the follower has a plunger in the back). Unfortunately being new to Armalite, I did not know there were Gen I and Gen II magazines. I stupidly bought several of the later type magazines (see pictures below). The bolt slams into the follower and causes all sorts of problems. These do not hold open and do not cycle reliably.

If I replace the bolt catch to a Gen II type bolt catch, will it cycle from both Gen I and Gen II magazines? Or is there a way to replace the follower on my Gen II magazines and convert them to a Gen I?

I really love this rifle, it is very accurate and well made. But the lack of magazines is a major bummer.

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry if i missed it, but i don't see any bolt catch on your magazine follower.i think that mag has been converted to armalite style as the feed ramps appear cut down. decades ago, armalite would send out the proper follower, but i cannot find it today...I replaced my bolt catch with some new upgraded version from armalite, so i can run the newer type mags.as well as the old mags.. pic of old mags versus newer mags. not sure i am helping. but wanted to share..

Yeah, this. His mag on the L is gen I, R is gen II. I have both, they both work well (though I is arguably better). I also don't see ANY bolt catch on the back of your follower.

If anything knows a source for new followers, I need one because I broke the back tab off a gen II with an OOB kaboom (debris on bolt face set of primer/round when bolt was released on loaded mag)
