Question in title? These are mid length handguards with a taper on the outside diameter.

Those are for the round retainer only. The "universal" hand guards look like these...

Midlength tend to be only for triangle caps, with or without the extra tabs. I've never seen the tabs fit a round cap.

Magpul has some Midlength handguards and the SW M&P 10 carbine handguards that fits round caps. But the vast majority of clamshell handguards, and drop in quadrails and similar for Midlength, are for triangle caps.
 
They're not expensive; buy a couple of each and use the one that fits.

From your original post I thought you just wanted to know which end-cap to buy.

Carbines typically use a round cap, rifles use triangle cap, mids use either.
