AR10 ejector spring

Is there a set pressure range for the 308's ejector spring? I was getting brass bits around the feed ramps on mine and the bolt had trouble locking up so I cut 3 rings off the spring. Then it wouldn't eject the shell in time and the thing would jam. I got new springs and cut 2 rings off and now it works fine. Just was wondering if there's a set pressure for it and a way to check that or do you just dink around with it till it works,, like I did?
