Why do you need so many magazines?

For some it's because, like anything, mags eventually wear-out or break. If a ban comes along, you want to already have enough mags to cover those that will wear-out or break over the course of you and your children's lifetimes. Buy a few here and there over time, so you're not caught in a panic, and paying panic prices, with everyone else who failed to prepare ahead of time.

For others it's almost an addiction: get more while you still can!

There's a never-ending debate among innumerable people about how many mags is "enough". Having 10 per firearm is just one common suggestion.

Don't mind @CamoDeafie. Everyone can be gruff at times. As much as you can, toughen your skin a bit (I'm always working on this), ignore the gruffness, and focus on the other responses.

@Gbirk don't take things personally. There are good people on this forum that will help you when you need it or most of us wouldn't be here. Some will reply in a comical smart azz way and some may come across gruff at times but we all learn together. My suggestion is go back and look at some of the old threads. I have personally learned a ton from reading old threads.

just my .02 cents

We don't use the N-word around here. My mags are full, and that's not all of them. I justify the type and amount to myself. You do what you want. I don't hold anyone to my standards, but me. If you're asking how many you SHOULD have, I would say at least one.
Again with this? Come on. A simple easy to answer question. And Need is a good word to use. It is a Very good word. It's not about justification it is about information and education. BE NICE PLEASE! Gbirk don't let this type of attitude or behavior stop you from asking questions.

Just I am tired of my own liberal acquaintances asking me "why do you need this, that, " et cetera, when it doesn't match their own opinions on how people should live. It applies to cars, it applies to equipment, it applies to the collection of gear, it applies to pretty much everything.
People sometimes want to know why people think or feel a certain way. This is NOT a bad thing, in fact, it is GOOD and should be encouraged. UnderstaNDING WHY YOU FEEL THE NEED TO HAVE x# OR WHATEVER COULD HELP EDUCATE AND save someone in the future

Honest question. Why do you need so many magazines? I have a couple of pistols right now and am looking at getting my first AR very soon. I constantly see people with dozens/hundreds of magazines. Why is that? Do you keep them all full?

Sorry to thread-jack.

As others have said "Need" has nothing to do with it, but I have a 10 Mag per AR rule for myself...it's subjective to each person really.

Perhaps we need to consider looking at this differently... Given that we all have a Pavlovian response to that N-word due to Lefty whinge about "But nobody NEEDS...", let's try thinking more in terms like MASH - Minimum Acceptable Supplies on Hand.

IE: What would you consider your MASH limits, and how did you reach that figure? :)

As for magazines , ammo , knives , guns, etc ...
One man's "needs" may be another man's starting point ... or ending point.

Buy what / how many you want ... then you will have what you need.

That said I don't like the idea of providing or proving a "need" for anything I want to buy...

OK, I'll give an example...

I have no way of knowing what I'll need, but my target is in case of COMWEC/Walking Dead enough to singlehandedly do a Sherman's March To The Sea to Toronto and back. The reason for this is... well, with some of her medical dependencies limiting her life expectancy after reversion to Pre-Industrial Age, my intent assuming she doesn't co-lo with me first is to be there to make my gal's last days as comfortable as possible, or if she can still get her needed iron infusions to extract her and her surviving relatives to safer territory.

So my target is enough skills and equipment to fight my way across a hostile continent and back with no logistical or tactical support, possibly with an invalid or several in tow on the return leg.

I like the MASH "rule of thumb" it helps give people a place to start. You don't need a phone or need a car. I don't need Taco Bell. But I feel the need so I need it LOL

Just throwing this idea out there....
Speaking only for myself ...
When I hear talk of needs in regards to guns , its usually by someone who is anti-gun or leans that way.

It seems to me that because they , the anti-gun person does not like or understand why I have guns , they feel that I must provide a "need" that meets their acceptance.
( which can be an impossibility )

So I am sorry if my "hackles" get raised when the need word is mentioned.
Just thought it might be of interest to know where I or maybe others are coming from...

I just wanted to say I appreciate everyone's reply (even the more gruff ones). I picked up a S&W Sport II recently and it only came with one mag. 1 is defiantly not enough, but I see for my needs maybe 4 will be good for now.

Oh, and I do NEED my guns regardless of what some liberal says, so that is where that came from. I may not NEED all of them at the same time, but if I ever need to use my bug out bag, there will be at least one gun in it, so that makes them a NEED, right next to the bottled water and food staples.

Sorry for derailing the tread, now back to the regularly scheduled programming..........

And a few more "need" thoughts ...
What does it matter if someone has one gun and a thousand magazines for it?
How is that any of your business?
Does it hurt or harm you in anyway?
Is it illegal?
Are they happy?
Why place a number or value on "need"?

As I said one man's "need's" can be another man's starting point or ending point.
Let them be the judge of what they "need."

Understandable, Andy, and I tend to have the same reaction--hence my proposal to rethink the approach so us who are still young, inexperienced and trying to determine our "starting supply goals" can learn from y'all's experience. :)

And for me personally, the interest is less in "numbers" than in learning how you guys process data and make decisions so I can develop those capabilities myself.

This, so much. Thank you. I just want to learn from people who have been doing this longer than I have and understand what I may be missing.

When I was maybe 12 or 13 (45 now) my dad and I assembled a black powder rifle and we had one of these for powder storage. That gun and all the parts are long gone unfortunately, but that picture brings back great memories. I think I may need to look into doing something like that with my daughter. I can't remember a gun that was more of a thrill to shoot than that when I was young. The huge clouds of smoke and giant lead ball just made it such an experience with every shot.
