I hope the CMP isn't shut down because of this. Lots of speculation. I'm sure all those serial numbers are well known and will draw a lot of attention when one pops up.

And if they weren't asking, it's probably because it's an "inside" job and someone was covering their tracks. Even selling them cheap, there's 50 grand...

CMP 1911 is a separate entity from the CMP and is FFL operated. Currently, all 1911 sales are suspended until there is resolution to this investigation. My initial hunch was that most of this would be found to be clerical or accounting errors, but now that the CID has offered up a reward for information, I am having doubts about that theory.

I also (still) believe it is an accounting error. If not, then it's an inside job, like those dudes that stole all the Pappy Van Winkle a few years ago.

Kind of odd they already assuming theft:

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for credible information that leads to the arrest or conviction of the person, or persons, responsible for the theft.

Are they necessarily assuming? Or do they know based on information they've gathered and not made public yet?

Yep... cause people who steal guns always follow the rules when re-selling... ;)
They're not criminals because they're smart. If this large amount of pistols are stolen, I doubt that person(s) is just going to hide them in their closet. Sooner or later they will sell one on the street, try to pawn it, or sell it at a gun show. One will turn up at a crime scene or in a stolen vehicle. A snitch will hear something. Then it begins to unravel. But I'm just speculating.
